Idea: The Simplest Slow Cooker Beef Ever

Updated: Jul 21, 2023 by Veronica Noone · This post may contain affiliate links · 13 Comments

    slow cooker beef pin

I may be married to the only man in America who doesn't like beef stew. Seriously, you will have to let me know because I can't imagine NOT liking only one of the most amazing comfort foods ever! My mom always made it with potatoes, carrots and beef. The sauce was thick and we'd dish out bowl after bowl at dinner.

When I make it, regardless of how, he pokes around the carrots, eats maybe one potato and devours the meat. The beef really is the only thing he eats.

So I decided to just go with it.

This morning I put a cut of beef in the crock pot with some onions and a simple gravy. That's it. Nothing fancy, no "weird" ingredients. Just the beef. Then at dinner I made some quick whole grain noodles and a side of broccoli.

Well you'd think I just made the meal of the century. Both husband AND child ate everything, no complaints, no faces, no bargains, just a quiet lovely dinner. Which is why I decided to share the idea with you.

    Ingredients

    • 3-4 small onion halved to cover the bottom of the crock
    • Stew beef. I used a large cut but you could use the cut stew beef
    • 1 10oz healthy request can cream of mushroom soup
    • 2 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce

    Instructions

Layer the onion on the bottom of the pot. Top with the beef.

In a bowl mix the soup with ¾ of a can of water and the Worcestershire sauce. Pour the soup mixture over the beef.

I cooked on high for 5 hours. My beef was frozen, it doesn't have to be.

We used the gravy from the pot to smoother the noodles and warmed some frozen broccoli. Simple, tasty and apparently a family pleaser. 🙂

No nutritional info on this one. It's just an "idea".

Just bumps up the flavor a bit. A for veggies.. if you cut them in big chunks (like 1/2 potato) you can put in from the beginning. If a little small maybe about 2 hours in.

What does the worcestershire do for it?? And if I would add veggies like carrots, pototaes, and such to it, when do you think I should add them so they won't end up mushy??

So yummy! I just had a chuck steak in my freezer. Our choices are slim as we buy a cow to freeze and can only choose so many cuts from the butcher. First time I used frozen beef in the crock pot and it was FAB. Thank you for your inspiration!

This seems about the level of complexity I can handle today. I did add some carrots. I know, CRAZY!

GTFO of here. DOESN'T LIKE BEEF STEW???? Divorce him, immediately. j/k! Looks great, I made some the other day in my crock pot but I only had ground beef so I made meatballs first then quartered them and added it in with a package of mccormacks gravy packet to add extra flavor and thickness. XD I was doing some SERIOUS stretching with that dinner.

Thank you thank you for this beef stew idea. I have tried a gazillion beef stew receipes and my hubby always says the same thing "the veggies are mushy and its not beefy enough!" So i am excited to give this one a try. I am fairly new to this site, but love receiving all your healthy meal ideas :0)

We do this with pork chops all the time and serve them over mashed potatoes. It is super easy and everyone loves it. The chops cook faster though.

Kim - I just think it's easier. I haven't had the same experience with frozen chicken. It works but for me it always comes out too dry. Which actually doesn't stop me from doing it. I have thrown frozen chicken legs in there with some success.

It looks awesome! I was always curious about frozen meat in the crockpot. Do you think it comes out better or is it just that its easier? Could the same thing be done with chicken??

My hubby hates beef stew as well. Actually he hates any beef cooked in liquid or as he says "boiled beef".

I feel for you with the cold. I had it for 3 weeks and thought it was leaving but yesterday - Bam! It was back again and worse then before. Argh!

I grew up hating traditional beef stew - telling my "I don't like how my potatoes taste like carrots... and the carrots are mushy.

WELL - As an adult I LOVE the traditional beef stew, as does my family... so - I can relate to both your husband AND YOU!

Glad you found a happy medium for the crew!
