Homemade teething Biscuit in 60 seconds!

Published: Oct 25, 2011 · Modified: Oct 16, 2020 by greenlitebitescom · This post may contain affiliate links · 104 Comments

Take a plain old slice of bread and turn it into the perfect teething biscuit!

This idea is nothing short of genius!

It’s perfect for small hands. It’s quick. It’s easy. It’s cheap. You many never buy a box of teething biscuits again! Check it out…

Start with a slice of your favorite Whole Grain Bread.
Skip the ones with seeds which may pose a choking hazard

Baby Food: Homemade teething biscuit 01

Cut off the Crust

Baby Food: Homemade teething biscuit 01

Store the crust in a ziplock bag.
It makes great breadcrumbs! Just save up all the crust and then run through the food processor.

Baby Food: Homemade teething biscuit 03

Squish down the Bread.
You can use a roller, but I just press with my fingers

Baby Food: Homemade teething biscuit 01

Take a small amount of Unsweetened Applesauce.
This is optional, I like to add a little flavor and the moisture helps make the bread "stick"

Baby Food: Homemade teething biscuit 04

Smear the Applesauce.
Just a super thin layer

Baby Food: Homemade teething biscuit 06

Sprinkle with Cinnamon

Baby Food: Homemade teething biscuit 07

Roll as tight as your can, squishing as you go along to have the bread stick together.

Baby Food: Homemade teething biscuit 08

Microwave for 60 seconds

Baby Food: Homemade teething biscuit 09

60 Seconds should be all your need but if the bread still seems real soft, microwave for another 30 seconds.

Baby Food: Homemade teething biscuit 10

Let it cool.
It may still be slightly soft, but as it cools it will harden nicely

Baby Food: Homemade teething biscuit 11

Offer it to the unsuspecting baby.
He'll think you slaved all day in the kitchen 😉

Baby Food: Homemade teething biscuit 12

The perfect teether!
Little Bean really likes these.

Baby Food: Homemade teething biscuit 14

Gnaw away Little Buddy. Gnaw away. 🙂

Great idea! Almost set my microwave a blaze the first time. Second time went on a 20% power for 60sec. Checking along the way. Then did an additional 45sec, also checking and turning. Little man will get it after he wakes up from his nap! That k you for the idea!

you may not want to microwave anything for your baby. Microwaving kills food. Period. If it is very unhealthy for us imagine what it does to their little bodies. Also babies under 1 year do not digest wheat and grains are not healthy for us either. Wheat also inhibits their absorption of calcium. Its a great idea though if we can find alternatives to these two parts of the recipe. Any other ideas for something like this?

Actually steaming and microwaving veggies is the best way to cook as it preserves more of the nutrients then baking and roasting! This is a great recipe thanks for posting it. These are for teething and the ones sold in stores are a choking hazard. Really don't know how they have been prepaired or processed or handled! God bless you and your family anf enjoy life while we are still here! !!!!! 🙂

My Mother Purchased some teething biscuits for my 10 month old son and gave one to him but she said they just crumbled up and even with NO teeth he bit a chunk out of it! I decided to try to make some for him and found this recipe so...I made it with a piece of 100% wheat bread. I sprayed it with I cat believe its not butter (he hates all things apple) and sprinkled a little cinnamon on it rolled it and microwaved it for 60 seconds. It seemed to take forever to cool so I popped it in the freezer. My son had been gnawing on this thing for over an hour! He has it in his little fist and has crawled all over the room, pulled up on furniture and played with his toys without letting it go! The best part is that he couldn't care less about what I am doing so I have been able to take care of housework without him getting fussy! THANK YOU SO MUCH!

I'd only put on in the microwave at a time. You can store them in an air tight container easily. And totally! Other flavors would work! Some people even skip the flavors.

These have truly saved the dreaded dinner hour when I'm trying to feed my 8 month old and cook dinner at the same time. With one of these in her hand, she gives me a few minutes in between bites of her purees to chop and stir what everyone else is having for dinner! I just used hardened whole wheat toast for my older two children, but these are so much sturdier (not to mention easier for the baby to hold). Thank you!

My 16 month old daughter has her molars coming now and has been cranky and eating less because of the pain. I was not sure if these would help now that she has a full front row of teeth to chew this. I used whole wheat bread, and just used finely blended fresh apple as a spread. No cinnamon. She simply loved it and ate 4 of these in one go, and it really helped soothe her gums too. Brilliant idea, thank you for this!

How young can you start your baby on these? My daughter is 4 months and 2 weeks and has been eating cereal since she turned 4 months, she took to cereal like she'd been eating for years, never even spit it out. She is teething and biting everything, I was hoping to buy her teething biscuits but they say 9 months and up on them, Im assuming because they crumble?

Our first attempt (and by our, I mean I read this page and comments), they didn't roll well (bread broke); spread is ripe pear instead of applesauce. Used Vermont Bread Co Organic multi-grain, no seeds).
Microwaved for 60 seconds, still seemed soft, did another 30. They are cooling now.
We bought the Earth's Best Barley and Healthy Times Vanilla (both organic) before finding this recipe, so have a comparison point...once we make them right.

What exactly caught on fire? The bread? Maybe you have a more powerful microwave, trying cutting time in half and then checking the hardness. I can honestly say I never had bread catch on fire before and I used at least 3 different types.

I tried this, and my newest loved it! Took two tries. The first one I nuked--for 60 seconds--caught on fire! Smoke was everywhere. It was 100% wheat bread... So did it again, microwaving and flipping at 7 second intervals, and it came out perfectly. My daughter gnawed and sucked that thing into a disgusting slimy mess. Might not make it everyday for that reason, but it's definitely something to do before bath time.

Kristina - I do not see why it would not work with GF breads. The only thing I can see being different would be that the texture of GF breads tend to be denser and drier. They might break up rather than squish down like regular bread does.

If I was making this with GF bread I woudl use a rolling pin to flatten the bread down rather than fingers because of the texture difference. GF breads tend to be more like the texure of french or italian breads rathern than regular bread for those who do not know.

Also I beleive the guide lines for giving gluten products to a baby are 6 months. If there is a history of celiac or intestinal issues of any kind in the family I would go with 1 year or at least when the child is talking well enough to let you know their tunny hurts after eating.

I read this and tried it immediately. I used baby food peaches instead of applesauce and sprinkled it with cinnamon. I thought it would be kind of like peach cobbler this way. I have to say I am beyond words. She loved it and it never broke apart. Thank you sooo much for posting this. I have been reluctant by those teething biscuits in the store, so having everything already in the kitchen at home I wasn't wasting money on the biscuits to find out she didn't like them or they fall apart. I'm going to pass this on to everyone I know with a baby.

I've been making these ever since I read this on pinterest and my baby LOVES them. I usually use a little smear of whatever baby food is already open for different flavors. She loves to hold it and will gnaw on it forever. I have found a lot of great stuff on pinterest but I probably use this one more than any others so far. Thanks again!

Roni - thanks for your great suggestions and baby food ideas. I guess what I'm really worried about are preservatives but I think I'm a little paranoid about food. I'm easing up though. @Sar, good idea. I'm going to give this a shot.

Natasha - First, you could skip the applesauce. It's not necessary but if you choose an unsweetened kind there should be nothing in but apples and ascorbic acid to prevent browning. Now the bread is a little harder. You could go with a sprouted variety which is less processed but there is no magic unprocessed breads. Bread is a processed food.

Just a note too, the babies don't really "eat" these. Sure they digest a little but it's not like a dozen of chocolate-chip cookies. They suck and gnaw on it, then it falls to the ground and you end up throwing most of it away.

    I hope that helps.

This is a terrific idea. I'm going to try this tomorrow. I also call my kids - both of them - beans. @Natasha - you can try steaming a few apple slices and mash them up w/a fork if you don't want to use packaged applesauce.

I've been trying to avoid processes foods as much as possible. Of processed foods, is there a bread and applesauce that is best?

I'm so glad I came across this. I don't know how many times it's been that my son has been gnawing on a teething biscuit then next thing I know he's gagging with half of it broken off in his mouth. I'm definitely going to try this for him!

An airtight container should be fine.

He's 7 months but I started solids at 4 months. I starting giving these to him around 5 months. I think it's fine but as always you may want to ask you doc a his 6m appointment.

Barb - I don't see why not. I'd go low and long though. Like 200 or 250 degrees until hard.

I really like this idea. We don't have a microwave - do you think putting it in the oven will give a similar texture?
