Chocolate Quinoa

Posted in: Breakfast Ideas, Food Photos | 29 Comments

Alright, you guys are either going to think I’m crazy or a genius! ;~P This is one of those thing I may only like.

I made it up yesterday being bored and stir crazy. I never realized how much I depend on the toddler to keep me going in the morning. This week without him has been rather bland. So to shake things up, I experimented in the kitchen!

I heard of people using quinoa for sweet dishes before but I’ve only tried it for dinner. Discovering it just a few months ago I love having a rice alternative. Well, now maybe I’ll have an oatmeal alternative too!

Chocolate quinoaI love the texture of the dish and it’s chocolaty without being too sweet, my favorite. I’m sure you could use regular skim milk and and some chocolate syrup but I happen to have light chocolate soy milk in the fridge (another new thing for me) and it worked great!

  • ¼ cup dry quinoa rinsed (66g)
  • ½ cup light chocolate soy milk (4oz)
  • 1 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder (6g)
  • 1/2 tsp almond extract

Whisk all ingredients in a small pot over medium heat and bring to a boil.

Lower to a simmer and cover. Cook for about 12 minutes until the quinoa absorbs most of the liquid. Serve!

I garnished with mint leaves to make the picture look prettier and I loved the chocolate mint bite!

I can’t wait to try this Roni! I recently had quinoa with berries and honey, but I love anything chocolate!

Did you eat this by itself (as sort of a pudding?)

  2. roni on June 21, 2008 4:51 pm

Julie – Yup, I had it like breakfast cereal. I ate it slow, because it was hot and I just love that texture in small amounts. It actually took me a long time to eat.

This sounds GOOD! Now maybe I’ll have a new use for my chocolate soymilk instead of just drinking half the carton in one sitting. It is a great craving buster though ;)

  4. JenK on June 21, 2008 11:36 pm

I have no clue what quinoa is but that dish looks good. A little bit like chocolate rice pudding.

I might have to find out what this quinoa stuff is…

  5. Gina on June 22, 2008 3:32 am

Hmm…that sounds yummy. Like JenK, I’m not familiar with quinoa. Your dish sounds a lot like a filipino dish I love called Champurrado. I gotta try your recipe.

Guys I forgot to link to my old quinoa post!

    Hope that helps!

    Brilliant :)

I clicked over from your other blog because I was kind of disturbed at the thought of chocolate quinoa, but now that I think about it more, chocolate oatmeal and chocolate rice pudding are delicious – so why not chocolate quinoa? It’s a grain, and grains aren’t intrisically savory.

I happen to LOVE sweet omelettes – egg whites + splenda and cinnamon. You could also make it with whole eggs, of course. That sounds weird to some people.

I’m going to go with genius.
This totally reminds me of my favorite hot breakfast as a kid… Coco Wheats!!! “The creamy hot cereal with the coco treat!”. Anyone remember that stuff? Mmm. Bet this is a way better option. ;)

  10. Mary on June 23, 2008 8:43 am

mmm… thanks for the idea. I cook up quinoa in my rice cooker with cinnamon and raisins. Then I add some agave nectar and milk and it is just as good as oatmeal!

  11. christy on June 23, 2008 1:05 pm

wow! We had this for breakfast and it was delicious…sooo chocolatey! We are new fans of quinoa and love trying new recipes for it. This reminds me of chocolate, peanut butter and oatmeal no-bake cookies, I used to make them as a kid and don’t anymore because they are too tempting for me! I wonder if there would be a way to make these into a cookie form…maybe you can work on that next Roni! Thanks for your site, I love your recipes and am very inspired by your weight loss. Thanks for what you do!

I’ll have to try this because all of your other recipes I’ve tried have been huge successes in my home (seriously, on my third batch of those whole-wheat banana muffins because my husband is inhaling them as fast as I can make them). I have tried quinoa twice and not been a huge fan either time, but I happen to have some kicking around from my last failed attempt. I’m determined I will learn to love quinoa because it’s just so darned good for you. Maybe this is “the one”, the turning point in my relationshp with quinoa…we shall see. :)

  13. Lou on June 24, 2008 10:02 am

Roni OK you got my attention on this one.

Some time this week I will try that one out. Maybe even tonight. I don’t have the almond extract, but that is easy enough to get on my travels.

I don’t know how you do it, but that mind of yours never stops does it now.

  14. Dev on June 24, 2008 1:24 pm

This looks good! I’ll be trying this once I’ve started eating grains again.

  15. Laura Brandon on June 24, 2008 3:18 pm

    this actually sounds really good!

  16. noelle on June 25, 2008 7:10 pm

hmmm….we’ll have to try that. The one time we had quinoa for breakfast, it was just too savory for me. I can totally taste the spinach influence in quinoa, but the chocolate just might cover that up.

[...] right, absolutely nothing. I read, I watched a stupid movie, I posted a food idea, I cooked dinner for myself and I [...]

  18. Meghan on July 23, 2008 5:42 pm

So is this supposed to be crunchy? lol

I cooked longer then 12 minutes but it didn’t seem to be getting to the right texture. The flavor was good but something about the texture….

Is there such thing as quick cooking Quinoa vs. regular ( like old fashion and quick oats??)While I love using this grain, mine always seems to take forever to cook….am I doing something wrong?

  19. Roni on July 26, 2008 11:42 am

LOL I don’t think there is a quick vs. regular. And the Quinoa does have a little firmness to it so that may be what you are tasting. Have you had it before?Anyone else having this problem?

  20. Janice on August 11, 2008 5:34 am

Roni, I just tried this. Actually, it was my first taste of quinoa as I had not had it before and I wanted to try it. This was very good and chocolatey. I cannot wait to try quinoa as a rice replacement. Thanks for sharing all of your great recipes.

  21. Janice on August 16, 2008 12:34 pm

Roni, Congratulations, my boyfriend liked this!!! Since he had a heart stent put in about a year ago he has been eating healthy and hating every minute of it. Well, we made this for breakfast yesterday and He said and I quote, “It’s not nasty!!” He said he would eat it again. Believe me Roni, this is a major compliment. Thanks again for sharing your recipes.

yum yum yum yum yum yum yum yum yum. always thought you have great ideas, roni….but this one just plain rocks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  23. Lynn on November 30, 2008 8:20 am

My hubby loves this and has been asking me to make it again for weeks. So this morning I obliged – and added 5gm of mini choco chips & 1/2 sliced banana as toppings – was AMAZING!!

Your recipes are always awesome! Thanks!

  24. Anne on January 20, 2009 10:43 pm

I made this tonight and it was really good! Thanks for the idea, I never would have thought of it!

  25. Howard on April 9, 2009 10:07 pm

To make 1 cooked cup of Quinoa, how much dry do I start with?

    Thanks, Howard

  26. roni on April 10, 2009 7:49 pm

Howard – I always measure dry, but If I was to guess I’d say 1/2 would equal about 1 cup cooked if not a bit more.

  27. Julie on October 19, 2009 12:17 pm

Sounds great. I love quinoa…do you think it would be as good with chocolate almond milk instead of soy milk? Or would that be too much with the almond extract?

  28. roni on October 19, 2009 2:28 pm

I think it would be Delish! Try it and let me know. I made this back before I tried Almond milk.

  29. Erin on October 20, 2009 10:08 am

I tried this with mint extract (a little less than half of what it calls for almond extract) and skim milk and it was delicious!
