I made these burgers for a quick lunch today. The husband said they smelled good, yet he opted for a plain old ham and cheese. Go figure. I've come to terms with the fact that I shall never understand his dietary choices. 😉
Being honest, I had no idea how these Tuna Burgers would turn out. I wanted to go a little nutty adding in mango or even pineapple, but then decided to go simple just to see if the base recipe would work out.
I'm happy to say it did! I was worried there would be a dryness to them, but the opposite was true. I think the ground oats helped soak up the moisture from the tuna and lemon juice. The burger texture was soft yet meaty. They held up very well!
Here's what I did...
Ingredients
- 1 7oz can of chunk tuna packed in water drained (some liquid ok)
- 1 egg
- ½ cup old fashioned oats (40g) ground up in a blender or food processor
- About â…“ cup of finely chopped bell pepper
- About ¼ cup finely chopped onion
- A large clove of garlic minced
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- ¼ teaspoon celery salt
- pinch of fresh ground black pepper
Instructions
Place all the ingredients in a bowl...
...and combine with hands.
Heat a non-stick skillet over medium-high heat and spray with non-stick cooking spray.
Form the tuna mixture into patties and place directly on hot skillet. Cook for about 3 minutes a side until browning and warmed thru.
I served mine on a whole grain thin with baby spinach leaves, ketchup (yes, ketchup,) black pepper and a sweet pickle slice. It was perfect! I can see going spicy or sweet with this base recipe. It all depends on your tastes!

Just finished eating one of these "burgers". They are delicious and so simple to make! Being a (pesce)vegetarian, it can be difficult to find interesting recipes to keep my taste buds excited while sticking to my dietary preferences- this recipe did the trick! The consistency was pretty good too, which I was concerned about initially. I think I might make more to stick in the freezer...

These burgers turned out great for me! Thanks for the recipe, it was hard to find a tuna burger recipe without mayo or sour cream.

These burgers turned out great for me! Thanks for the great recipe.

These are delicious! Quick and easy. I like to mix together some sriracha and mayo with a little spoonful of this super spicy asian chili mixture my boyfriends mom makes. Spread a little spoonful of that on the burger, add a tomato and some spinach leaves and call it a day!

I'm sure it will work, I just tend to use oats more often. I've made it my grinding them up as well and they come out just as good. Probably similarly as if I used breadcrumbs.

Could you use bread crumbs instead of oats for this recipe?

Made this for lunch today. Delicious! Very filling. Didn't have celery salt or peppers and it was still yummy. Question, your nutritional info is with the bun right?
Julie
Roni -- these were yummy!! My kids (teenagers) were skeptical, but even they had to admit they were pretty darn good. I'm thinking would also be good made as a tuna loaf and sliced (like meatloaf). Anyway - love, love, LOVE your ideas! Keep em coming! 🙂

I am so making these for lunch...so sick of tuna sandwiches! I made salmon burgers from the dr oz show last week and they were super tasty! Almost the same! The show was meals for under $1...this one would even be cheaper!
Barbara
thank you so much I always buy salmon burger but never thought of making tuna burgers. This is a great idea. thank you again.
I always thought there should be another use for that tuna in a can.

I love tuna burgers--I usually make a tropical tuna burger with pineapple and a zesty chipolte sauce. Tuna burgers are super cheap to make too!

This looks delicious! I've never thought of grinding up oats in the food processor for tuna burgers.

Thanks Roni 🙂

Before. So it's still 40 g but I'm unsure what the "cuppage" is. Probably around 1/4 after it's grinded up. You could use breadcrumbs too.
Jan
Roni, this looks great. I am always trying to find new things to do with tuna. Did you grind the oats before or after you measured them?
