I'm SO excited to share this idea with you!
I've been experimenting for months. First, I started making homemade chocolate milk with cocoa powder and maple syrup but my kids never went for it. The grittiness of the powder never seemed to go away even if I simmered the milk to incorporate.
I thought they would get over it but they didn't. So I pondered ways I could make it more like store-bought chocolate milk using ingredients I had at home.
Then it hit me! Why not first combine the cocoa powder AND the syrup together and then add it to the milk instead of trying the blend all three cold.
It worked like a charm! I was seriously shocked how good my first small experimental batch came out. I kept dipping my finger in it, tasting in disbelief.
So I set out to make a larger batch and after a few tries I nailed the consistency, put it in a saved chocolate syrup jar and asked the kids if they wanted chocolate milk.
NOT A WORD.
They happily drank away.
The 3-Year-Old asked for seconds!
That's when I knew I had a winner!
Here's what I did...
Ingredients
- 1 cup maple syrup (335g)
- 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (80g)
- ½ cup water
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- Pinch of salt
Instructions
Put all ingredients in a pot over medium heat.
Bring to a light boil.
Let simmer for about 1-2 minutes.
Cool and store in your favorite chocolate syrup bottle!
(If you are sneaky like me, make some and add to a half empty bottle of the store bought stuff. You'll be transitioning them to your new recipe without them ever knowing. )
Here's a video of the process.
I'm not kidding, I don't think I'll EVER buy store bought again!
My current obsession is slicing up a banana and topping it with a drizzle.
It makes something so simple really decadent!
Nutritional information for this was tough for me so I depended on my math skills so, umm yeah, you may not want to trust me. Here's what I calculated per tablespoon.

Awesome! I am so making this. We started a bad habit of letting our 3 year old have chocolate milk and now he won't drink white milk very often. We use Ovaltine but I think he'll like this just as much.

Roni - you are amazing!!! It is so nice to see you how you cook and how you communicate .Your smile and sense of humor makes you want to prepare all of these healthy dishes. Thank you very much for shearing the ideas you have. You know, I think I will be nice if you could have own cookshow on TV. Greetings from France!

I made this the other night and it turned out great! I had it over ice cream and it was a little gritty, not sure if I did something wrong. That being said, it tasted delicious, Roni is right, it doesn't taste like maple syrup. I think it would be awesome in milk. I suppose I could use baker's chocolate so it would be smoother without the gritty feeling.
I may also try the coconut oil just to see if I could get the crunchy shell!

Actually if you add a little more water and boil it for a few more minutes the grittiness goes away! Just discovered this! 🙂

You could take this one step further and take your yummy homemade healthy chocolate syrup, mix with coconut oil and drizzle over your banana ice cream to make the shell!!

I crave chocolate milk once in awhile. Love this healthier version for me and my kids. I have everything in my fridge to make it right now. Yum!

What a great idea!!! I buy chocolate syrup that doesn't have HFCS but still only use it every once in awhile. I think my bottle is half empty so I will be making this real soon. Thank you so much for this!!! As far as the nutritional info....anything HAS to better than the store bought stuff :-).
