Happy Valentines Day! Dark Chocolate Strawberry Smoothie

Published: Feb 14, 2011 · Modified: Oct 16, 2020 by greenlitebitescom · This post may contain affiliate links · 22 Comments

Not feeling very festive at 8 months pregnant and not being married to Mr. Romance, I thought I'd celebrate with a simple Valentines day treat for myself.

It seems V-day is all about the chocolate covered strawberries anymore. They were sold out of them at the grocery store and my local candy spot has been taking ordered for weeks! I thought, why not put the flavors of dark chocolate dipped strawberries into a simple smoothie? Happy Valentines Day! Dark Chocolate Strawberry Smoothie

The result was a a yummy combo of strawberry milk with flecks of dark chocolate. Not too sweet but oh so satisfying! I loved the texture. It was a fun twist for me to celebrate the holiday.

Here's what I did..

  • 20g of your favorite dark chocolate
  • 140g of frozen strawberries (about 1 cup)
  • About 1 cup Almond Milk (I used unsweetened but vanilla would be awesome!)
  • Extra sweetener of your choice to taste (optional)

As I said on my Weight Loss Blog this is my newest obsession...

Happy Valentines Day! Dark Chocolate Strawberry Smoothie - dark chocolate trader joes

SO decadent and fruity and amazing! A "serving" is listed as 40g. I chose to use half for this idea which is about what I eat in a sitting as well. It's really the perfect amount with this type of dark chocolate.

Put the chocolate and strawberries in the blender.

Add the milk.

Blend until smooth.

As you can see the chocolate never really gets incorporated which is what I thought would happen.

Happy Valentines Day! Dark Chocolate Strawberry Smoothie - step 4

I'm not sure others will but I love those tiny bits of chocolate!

As I said, my version is not overly sweet so you may want to add some sweetener. I enjoyed it with the simple sweetness from the strawberries and the bitterness of the chocolate.

This isn't something I'd make every day but I loved the variation on this laid back Valentines day. 🙂

I would use weeklies if I wanted it. This was a special treat for the holiday. I wouldn't drink it daily just like I wouldn't have a slice of birthday cake daily.

Sometimes you just have to indulge.

Not to mention I was pregnant when I made it.. I wasn't on plan.

I have a question. How do you work a 8 point smoothie into the plan. Most of us only geat 29 points for the day. do you take it out of your weekies.

I just tried this smoothie today - I added a couple of dates to sweeten just a touch and some protein powder so I don't fall asleep this afternoon before I finish working. 🙂 It was delicious! Thanks for all of your awesome ideas and inspiration!

Hi Roni, Besides the bullet, can you share the brand of the other blender you use? Also, is it good for blending green/veggie smoothies?

I can't afford the vitamix so, so i've gotta look for other options. 🙂

    thanks!

Oooh! Going to have to try this one. It reminds me of a smoothie/ice cream thing I used to make all the time. It's chocolate cherry rather than strawberry. So good!

    • 1 10 oz. bag of frozen cherries (cheapest at Trader Joe's, I've found)
    • About ½ a cup of almond/soy/cow/whatever milk
    • 1-2 tablespoons of cocoa powder
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (can be omitted if using vanilla milk)
    • 1 or 2 dates, pitted, can be added for sweetness (or 3-6 raisins) (or a couple of drops/dashes of stevia, or nothing)

Probably better to make in a food processor since it's so thick, though you could probably double the liquid and get a more smoothie-like consistency.

I haven't had this in a while and I'm realizing now that it would be like 1 PP for the entire thing if I used stevia/no sweetener. Hmmmm... I'm going to have to see how things like this affect my weight loss. I definitely like the free fruit thing. Definitely helps me make better snack decisions. But for something like this it might be too much. I suppose if it does turn out that things like this stall out my weight loss a bit (which I haven't experienced yet, thank goodness!), I could count them as maybe half of the points that their nutrition information would give me? I definitely want there to be an incentive to eat fruit rather than junk, but when you can make fruit taste this good, I might never stop!

Took me awhile too! I started at chocolate, then vanilla, then unsweetened vanilla, now unsweetened. It was like a year long process! lol

This is goood. I wish I had vanilla almond milk. I'm trying to get used to the unsweetened almond milk but it's taking a while. But I was thinking about this shake as I stood in line at the checkout at Whole Foods, fortunately they had a dark chocolate bar right there for me. The good thing is that I now have more dark chocolate so I get to make it again!

Just made these this morning for my sweetie & myself, and boy are they yummy! I used Hershey's Special Dark Chocolate syrup in mine, because neither of us like little chunks in ours. The taste is quite nice, and it blended in very well.

I love your site, and while I still haven't found the courage to try a green smoothie, the makings are in the fridge!
