    What Came Home?

    20130520_home

I've been making lunch for the 7-year-old less and less. This seems to always happen toward the end of the school year. There's more activities, field trips, parties, etc. I tend not to worry about it. I send him to school with a good breakfast in his belly and I cook dinner most nights. He eats well overall and I think letting him make his own choices at school is a necessary part of growing up.

That being said, we kick off each school week by making his lunch together on Sunday nights. His go-to protein source is hard boiled eggs, which is GREAT -- IF I could get him to consistently eat the yolks. He asked for the bagel, which I thought would be a good companion to the egg. Then we, of course, followed my one vegetable/one fruit rule for the rest.

Honestly, I have so many darn ideas but it comes down to balancing his likes and my wants. I guess that's a huge part of parenting in general, huh?

      Hi Ronie,

You're lucky to balance your child's likes from your wants. In my case, my 9-year old daughter also loves the meal I'm preparing for her but as she grows up, she tends to request more food that she likes. I give in to her request once in a while since I'm happy she's doing great in school and she's healthy. 😀

I think it's wise that you let your seven year old have some freedom with his lunches. I remember going through the lunch line in elementary school was always pretty exciting. That should help with his development. My husband always rushes to work without a lunch and ends up blowing money on a lot of unhealthy snacks. I might try packing it for him for a couple days to see how he likes it. Thanks for the ideas.

My kids love hard boiled egg, but complain that they smell by lunch time. How do you keep the smell down or does it just not bother him?

He's never complained. I just send them peeled in the insulated lunch box.

When I was a kid I wouldn't eat the egg yolks either. It's something about the way they felt in my mouth, all sticky and gummy. I'ld eat the yolks wrapped in lettuce though.

I was just going to ask the same question as Kristine 🙂 I thought there'd be a punchline about it.
