Dark Chocolate Blueberry Protein and Spinach Smoothie


Ok, I’ll be the first to admit it. That doesn’t sounds appetizing at ALL!

BUT it’s the smoothie I make more than any other smoothie hands down, and it’s time I share the specifics.

First though, let me apologize for my short hiatus. Last week I was in NYC for the BlogHer conference. I spoke at Healthminder day, launched a new Travel Blog and partied like it was, well, 1979. Safe to say I’ve done NO cooking (or grocery shopping) since Tuesday of last week. When I woke up to a house with no eggs (my go-to breakfast) I decide to whip up my favorite smoothie instead.

According to NutritionData.com this concoction is a good source of Iron, Phosphorus and Potassium, and a very good source of Dietary Fiber, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin K, Folate, Magnesium, Copper and Manganese. It’s under 200 calories and you can make it super quick while grumpy babies tug at your pant legs.

Yea, it was one of those days. I wouldn’t have had time to eat even if I wanted to.

Dark Chocolate Blueberry Protein and Spinach SmoothieAnyway, this recipe isn’t super sweet and isn’t suppose to be. The dark chocolate with blueberries is the perfect favor combination in my opinion. The spinach is undetectable and the protein powder makes it that fun smoothie texture. If you like yours a little sweeter add a half of ripe banana or a little honey, but try it first without, you may be surprised!

  • 2 cups raw spinach (44g)
  • 1 cup frozen blueberries (100g)
  • 1 scoop unflavored protein powder (like Any Whey)
  • 2 tbsp Dark Cocoa Powder (like Special from Hershey’s)
  • 4-6 oz of Unsweetened almond milk (I start with 4 and add a splash more if needed)

Put everything in the blender or bullet.

Blend until smooth.

The 7 year old said he didn’t like it because blueberries and chocolate don’t “go together only strawberries and chocolate do.” He’s welcome to his opinion of course, but I told him he was crazy. ;)

    My protein powder is chocolate flavored — do you think I could skip the cocoa powder and just use that instead? I use it in my smoothies daily and am always looking for new recipes to mix it up! I especially like smoothies that incorporate instant coffee so I can get my caffeine fix at the same time. Any ideas?

    I have made it with chocolate flavored protein powder before. I just prefer to buy the unflavored so I can do what ever I want with it. I’m also obsessed with the dark cocoa stuff. As for coffee, I’m not a fan so not much health there. Sorry. :(

    This is delicious! I’ve been making a very similar one every day for the last month except that instead of protein powder, I put in 2 tbsp of nonfat plain greek yogurt and 2 tbsp of silken tofu (to bulk up the protein content). I also use light soymilk (sometimes use almond milk) and put in 1 heaping tbsp of ground flaxseeds and 1 tsp of matcha green tea powder (a bit costly and definitely an acquired taste but oh so good for you!) I’m on Weight Watchers too and was wondering how you calculate the 6 points on this particular smoothie above since with the new Point Plus system, all fruits and veggies are zero points so the blueberries and spinach don’t count. You should come up with about 4 points (2 for the protein powder and 2 for the milk). Am I missing something?

    I calculate all points just on nutritional information. This post may (kind of) clarify things… link to ronisweigh.com

    Apparently counting “free” fruit in things like smoothies is up for interpretation. I go the safe route and count them. I don’t want to falsely advertise the point values of things and I’d rather err on the side of over counting than under counting.

    Just my opinion, of course you can count any way you like! :)

    Thanks Roni. That (sort of) clarifies it….I did use the recipe builder on Weight Watchers online to recalculate my smoothie and it came out to 6 points! Versus the 4 that I usually count it as which may explain why I haven’t lost as much weight as I would have liked to by now…that’s my excuse! :)

    Sounds delicious but 6WWPTS? Seriously! I can think of a whole lot of other fun things to eat for that many points! Any thoughts on how to lower the # of points?

    Llow – I would normally agree with you but this is what I eat for breakfast on days I don’t have time to eat. It’s not a treat or a dessert. ALthough, I think it tastes like one. That being said, you can’t get much more bare bones than this recipe. You could use water instead of milk to shave 40 cals and skip the protein powder to save 70cals but you’ll probably lose the smoothie-ness of it.

    Also, some people wouldn’t count this as 4 by skipping the spinach and blueberries as they are free. But since WW won’t shed light on that conundrum I go with the highest possible points the recipe could be.

    I made one this morning and it was DELICIOUS ! If you have never had spinach in a smoothie, you cannot taste i, I promise, but all of the health benefits are hiding in there. I could barely taste the blueberries, just the chocolate, but that was OK with me:) I only had Jillian Michaels Chocolate Protein powder and it turned out fantastic ! Thanks for all of the inspiration Roni. You really help so many of us :)

    Just made this after my run this morning and it’s really good, thank you. Recently, I’ve been getting a lot of romaine lettuce in my co-op basket so I use it instead of spinach and I like that I can’t taste it. Hubby had some chocolate whey protein on hand too (i don’t ever buy it), so that worked.

    I was recently diagnosed with gastroparesis, so smoothies are now going to be my main source of nutrician. I don’t do well with fiber and am wondering if you have any of your yummy smoothie recipes that are lower in fiber. I love the recipes that I have seen and have these pinned for my girls!

    Hi… I just love your site; thank you for taking the time to share all of your creative ideas with us! I’ve run into a problem I thought you might be able to help me with. Based upon your recommendation, I have enjoyed the unflavored Any Whey Protein Powder in a variety of foods. It’s really helped me boost my protein and energy level.

    My problem is that is appears that the “Any Whey” brand is discontinued now. Do you happen to have another brand/type that you would recommend?

    I lovethis smoothie!! I am trying to get in more veggies but my pregnanacy nausea is not liking the flavors of anything green. This smoothie helps me to be able to keep down a large amount of veggies and taastes great. My 2 year old gave it a thumbs up! Thanks for posting it!
