Baby food is normally BORING. Sweet potato. Carrots. Peas. Rice Cereal. Sure they make some combos like summer vegetables or apples with blueberries, but there’s no pizzazz to them.
I say add a little spice! Little Bean has already had cumin dusted pork chops, greek spiced salmon, and Mexican chicken. I also add a bit of spice to his morning bowl of oatmeal. Here’s how I make "Apple Pie Oatmeal" for Baby….
First…
A Cheerio appetizer.
He's getting it!
Look at those chipmunk cheeks!
Start with an apple.
Cut into chunks and leave the skin intact, there's a lot of nutrients there!
Add Yogurt.
I used ¼ cup of Whole Milk Yogurt
Blend.
Let it go for a good minute. You don't want skin chunks choking your little one.
Pureed Apple with Yogurt:
You could just feed them this, but it's fairly boring. Let's jazz it up!
Add Oatmeal and a dash of cinnamon.
I also added two scoops of formula since I'm supplementing.
Mix all together.
Take a taste. It's pretty good!
Baby likes!
I couldn't snap the first taste test picture. He was too hungry!
Frankly, he was pounding this!
I couldn't keep up with him.
Water break.
Since I put the formula IN breakfast I let him sip on water. It's gives him practice and a taste for it. I run a juice free house, so this is his only option as he gets bigger.
Like I said...
...everything is better with thumb.
One Happy Full Baby!
How do I know he's full?
This.
This.
This.
And this.
All done!
He couldn't finish it. I didn't expect him to. It was a BIG bowl!
Store leftovers.
They won't last longer than 24 hours because of the formula. I simply saved them for lunch. It was his dessert.
He's getting the hang of the cup.
He played with it while I cleaned up! He's not quite drinking by himself, but he's getting close!

Hi!
I love your website! My 8 month old wants nothing to do with store bought baby food. His only source of nourishment has been my breastmilk. I am excited to try out some of your recipes. I was wondering if you are using baby oatmeal or regular oatmeal in your Apple Pie Oatmeal recipe? The picture looks like baby oatmeal but just want to make sure.
Thanks! 🙂

Hi Michele - I used baby oatmeal at first (and in this recipe.) I found it easy to add and thicken foods without having to cook it.
Glad you like my ideas!

Hi Katie, these are all just my opinions so take it with a grain of salt, I'm not an expert by any means...
1.) The Juice. Its just liquid sugar with some Vitamin C. I'd rather my kids eat an apple then drink apple juice. I don't allow it in my home but when we are out or at friends houses they can have it there. I feed my kids enough healthy whole fruits and vegetable that I don't need to supplement with juice. Plus I want them to get used to drinking water. This is how I raised my 7 year old and he now chooses water 90% of the time.
2.) Formula in foods. No one told me I could do this I just did. I figured it's not that different then fortifying foods with protein powder or other powdered supplements. That's really all formula is, a powder supplement. It ups the protein, fat and vitamin contents of the whatever you mix it with. I didn't do it all the time, just while he transitioned from breastmilk to solids. And no, I don't add water to it unless it's too think. I gave him water on the side.
Hope that helps.

A friend found your teething biscuit idea and sent it to me. Pretty ingenious and then I kept looking thru your other posts. I too make my own baby food and no juice here either. The pediatrician even agreed with not giving him juice so I feel justified in not giving the juice. Too much sugar. I use a magic bullet too, works great and def worth the money. I look forward to more of your ideas.

i'm loving this post! i don't have kids yet but i definitely plan on feeding them the same foods i eat and will most likely have to get a magic bullet for those baby sized portions!

I think the pictures of him being "done" are hilarious! I wish I had your sense of adventure when my two were little! Way to go!
