Garden Tuna Salad With Feta

OK, don’t stone me for this but I HATE tuna salad. I never order it. Ever. I think it’s gross and totally disgusting. Not because of the tuna but because of the mayonnaise. I’ve never been a fan of mayo, even when I was a kid. Once I saw someone make it in a demonstration (blending oil and egg together) and it sealed the deal for me forever. No mayo thank you very much, I’ll stick with mustard.

But I really do like tuna. As I was rummaging through my fridge/pantry wondering what I was going to make last night, I came across a can. I also just happened to get my new shipment of feta from Athenos. A light bulb went off!

What if I make tuna salad with feta instead of mayo?! I had this great Lemon Garlic Oregano flavor that would be perfect with tuna. So I chopped some veggies and gave it a shot.

SO glad i did! This was totally delicious, light and super easy. I really felt like I was eating something from the deli. It made a great summer wrap but you could top a bed of greens with it or even eat it straight up.

This is how I made it but you may want to add some onion. I’m not the biggest fan of raw onion so I tend to forget about it for salads, but even I think a bit of chopped red onion would be great in this!Garden Tuna Salad with Feta

If you can’t find the Lemon, Garlic & Oregano Feta, don’t fret, just bump up the lemon juice and oregano to make up for it. You could even add a sprinkle of garlic powder.

  • 1 5oz chunk light tuna packed in water, drained
  • 1/4 cup (34g) Athenos Lemon, Garlic & Oregano
  • About 1/2 cup chopped cucumber
  • About 1/2 cup halved grape tomatoes
  • About 1/2 cup chopped bell pepper
  • 2 tsp lemon juice
  • 1/2 tsp dried oregano (or more to taste)

Combine all ingredients.

It doesn’t get any easier then that!

Here’s what half the recipe looked like on my wrap. I’d say it was about a cup but I didn’t really measure it. I just eyeballed half and enjoyed the wrap last night for dinner.

    I don’t eat pasta salads, cole slaw, or potato salads because I’m not a fan of a lot of mayo. I grew up smearing (scraping!?) just a tad of miracle whip on my burger, sandwich, or hot dog, and sometimes mayo, but I never liked it seeping out from my sandwich, and I always ask for it to be withheld if someone else is making my sandwich/burger/wrap because nobody knows the meaning of “only a little” mayo.

    I did grow up on tuna salad though. I don’t have the guts to try canned tuna in any other form though. Perhaps one of these days…

    YUM! That looks great. I hate mayo, too- just thinking about it makes me a little queasy. I do tuna salad with feta, lemon juice, thyme, carrots, celery, salt and a few cracks of black pepper.

    Roni you made me crave tuna!! I follow RonisFood tweets and after my workout I read your tuna post and had to have it! I sadly DON’T have Feta available here (I live in Trinidad) but I did the wrap STUFFED with veggies, so delicious :) thanks for the great ides roni

    I’m with you on the mayo yuckiness scale–hate it. Can’t even smell it. So I’ve been substituting low fat or fat free greek style yogurt in place of mayo—works like a charm…and a little goes a long way–try it!! All the best and happy eating!

    I usually make tuna salad with mostly mustard (I prefer Gulden’s spicy brown) and a tiny bit of mayo, maybe a 1/2 teaspoon. At a truck stop restaurant I used to frequent in another state they made it with honey mustard. I like Marlo’s idea of the greek yogurt, I’ll have to try that next time I make some.

    Second the hummus idea. I’ve made tuna with hummus as the “mayo” before and it’s really good. However, I do love mayo and it’ll probably gross you out but I’d rather dip my fries in mayo then ketchup. Ewww, huh? :)

    This was delicious! I made it with leftover cutup turkey! Add a little basamic and it’s out of this world. Roni, you have made my work lunches far less boring :)

    wow! I love those nutritional stats! I have NEVER liked mayo, only miracle whip, and even that only on rare occasions. I think I could totally get my husband to eat this, and I have most of the ingredients in my garden!

    A great substitute for mayo is avocado. Mayo has so many unwanted calories, and avocados have great healthy fats, which we all need. I use them all the time to replace mayo, especially on sandwiches and burgers.

    Okay, so I don’t mind mayo, but I know it packs a punch calorie and fat wise, and I don’t really care for tuna, so I used canned chicken (which I always use for salads) for this recipe. I only had plain feta, and didn’t really want lemon juice with my chicken, so I used a little light balsamic vinaigrette dressing, and this was fabulous. IS fabulous, I should say, because I’m eating the second half for lunch as I type. I’m having it on a whole wheat sandwich wrap. So proud of myself for having something other than lean cuisine!

    I am a huge fan of mayo, love, love love it… however, it doesn’t love me, or my scale, and the one reason I hardly ever eat tuna salad is because of the huge amount of mayo that needs to go into it to moisten it. It becomes incredibly fattening. So thanks for this great alternative, I can’t wait to give it a try!!

    Another great tortilla to use is Tortilla Factory’s Smart & Delicious Low Carb High Fiber Large Tortillas. I love these, but next time I make it to a SuperFresh I’ll check out the AC ones.
