Yelatin is a repost from 2008. I was hoping it get it up before Easter, but it just didn't happen.
I remade it for this Easter so that I would have some new photos. However, I don't have the jello mold any longer, so I just used a casserole dish, and getting it out was a little hairy, as you can tell from my photos.
It stuck a little when I flipped it, but it came out great otherwise! We had fun eating it yesterday.
Here's the original Yelatin post and photo from March 2008...
Or as the husband likes to call it, jell-ogurt.
I came up with the idea for a St. Patty’s day treat and now I’m obsessed. Having a houseful of family for Easter weekend gave me the perfect opportunity to try the new dessert on others over the age of 2 (the toddler is already a fan). Well, it was a hit! My mom especially liked it, calling it a very refreshing dessert, great for a BBQ or summer party.
I decided to use a traditional jell-o mold and make 3 batches in 3 different flavors. The result was a very festive 3 layer refreshing dessert. Topped with fresh berries and a bit of light whip cream it’s just perfect!
The following recipe and nutritional information is for 1 batch of yelatin yielding 4 – ½ cup servings but you can, of course, get creative and festive with multiple boxes and flavors!
Well, I'm happy to say that 2-year-old still loves Yelatin even at fourteen. His little brother wasn't a fan, but he doesn't like plain jello either, so he's no help.
Here's the Yelatin recipe. I'm glad I dug this one up. It's good, cheesy fun, and much lighter than the chocolate chip cookies I've been making in quarantine.

📖 Recipe
Yelatin
Ingredients
- .3oz sugar free gelatin dessert like jello – any flavor
- 1 cup 8oz hot water
- 1 cup 227g fat free plain yogurt
Instructions
- Dissolve the gelatin mix in the boiling water. Whisk in the yogurt. Refrigerate for about 2 hours until set..3oz sugar free gelatin dessert, 1 cup 8oz hot water, 1 cup 227g fat free plain yogurt
Notes
- As you can see, I like making 3 batches and stacking them. All you need to do is wait for each later to set before adding the next.Â
- You can use regular sugar jello as well. I'm not the biggest fan of artificial sweeteners but the goal here was a light dessert.Â

Never tried it but I don't see why not!

looks great! Do you think soy yogurt would work? My daughter has severe dairy allergies.
Sarah
made this with fat free greek yogurt (i'm sure it changed the stats a bit), but, oh so yummy
roni
Lissa - I think she just mean non-sugar free. Some people are not into the artificial sweeteners.
Lissa
they make natural jello?? just sounds funny! I'll have to look for that! I love the breakfast idea! Something fun & memorable! (and that's what it's all about! 🙂
Megan
Great idea! I'm going to use all-natural jell-o, sliced fruit and and Greek yogurt for a fun breakfast treat!

I think I'm going to try this once I get the yogurt stocked in my frig. Have you ever tried unsweetened applesauce in jello? The texture is a little different, but I think it's very good -not sure if it'd be toddler aproved though! =]

How'd I miss this recipe the first time around? It looks fantastic. I'm going to have to try it. I think we have some egg-shaped molds ... I could make jiggly yelatin eggs!
roni
Julie - It would but if it's sweetened it may be TOO sweet. as the jello is too.
julie
i wonder if it would work with the fiber one yogurt?
Jean
I tried your Yelatin.. and let me tell you I am addicted! It is wonderful. I a cherry one and put it in a chocolate low fat graham cracker crust and a little ff cool whip on top and it was delicious! Good work!

Julz -
Thanks so much!
Actually that is a full size mold but I made 3 batches. So the mold makes 12 servings. Sorry for the confusion. But I'm glad you like it!! :~D
PS Blog Roll is fine! ;~P
Tracy - Thanks! I was going to try that soon too!
Tracy
Just wanted to share I took Christines idea and made a graham cracker crust in a 9x13 pan and the used the lemon jello (sugar free) - it is VERY good with some low fat cool whip!

B-E-A-UUUTIFUL! I love this! I adore your blog and have been a reader for quite some time, but for some reason I don't believe that I've ever commented?! Could this be possible??? Do you use a full size mold for this? And this only yields 4 servings?! WOW! It sounds H.E.A.V.E.N.L.Y. too! FAB JOB RONI!
(PS) I added you to my blogroll when I first made it, but I realized that I never asked you if it was alright! My apologies! Have a wonderful Evening 🙂

I love this. I love what you did with the colors make's it look even better- I'm all excited now and going to try it! My mum used to make a version of this for us when we were kids adding some evaporated milk (that tastes sooo smooth and good!) I made a version more like yours last night before I'd even seen this here!.. The only difference was that after adding the hot water to the Jello I put it in the fridge and let it start to set then added the yogurt with a hand full of crushed berries, whipping it all together in a mixer until it almost doubled in size.. makes like a jelly mousse 😀 SOO good! If you like this you have to try it!

I made this on Friday! I used raspberry for the top and lemon for the bottom (those are the only flavors I had on hand). For the yogurt I used fat free Greek plain yogurt. It came out AWESOME!! I think banana Jello made this way would taste even better, so I am going to the store tonight to pick some up. Thank you Roni! Your site is great!
Christine
We're obsessed here...just made it with lemon jello. I was saying to Roni, you could break up some 100 cal packs of oreos or graham cracker crumbs, throw them in a muffin tin and make mini yelatin pies! Hello lemon meringue pie! SO GOOD, this is the best!
Christine
I finally gave in and made this...my kids really liked it and the yogurt cut the "bite" of sugar free jello, it was a nice consistency- it would be nice with fruit gelled in there as well. Lots of possibilities, you can put it in a graham cracker pie shell as well. Its a great idea, thanks!
Chelsea
I love this! I made it yesterday & my husband & daughter love it too. So few calories and so tasty! thanks for the idea. I'm going to be a yelatin fanatic.
Kris
We made this last night w/strawberry jello - it was great! Even the husband liked it! Can't wait to have an occasion to make it layered.
Brenda
You can also do a variation of this with sour cream. Not sure if the FF sour cream would work but it is worth a try. My sister makes this all the time for holidays and picnics and it goes so fast.

Okay I'm totally doing this.
roni
OK, I think this answers everyone's questions....
I'd make one batch of yelatin, add it to the mold, let it set and then added another.
I first sprayed the mold with non-stick cooking spray. Worked like a charm!!
As for servings in the mold, I used 4 boxes, each with 4 servings each. That makes 12 servings (although we got more then that out of it). Each layer was prepared with the yogurt although alternating regular jello and yelatin would be fun!!
Hope that helps!
Michele
Wow, that looks beautiful! I would love to know how you layered it. I'd like to try it. Thanks!
Laura
My mom used to make something like this when I was a kid. We always had it for 4th of July and just loved it.
Her recipe used sour cream instead of yogurt - but I best it tastes the same. She also split up each of the flavors - she would pour half in w/out yogurt, then mix the yogurt in the other half. So it would be bright red, then the whitish red, then bright green, then whitish green, etc. So pretty and delicious!
Sherri
Roni,
About how many servings did you get when using the jello mold? It looks awesome, I would love to try it. Did you prepare each layer with 1 cup of yogurt or are some just jello? Thanks for the information, love your ideas!!
Sherri
Beth
How do you get it to come out of the mold cleanly? (or does it just do that on its own?) I'm so excited to try this recipe!
Julie Cooper
This looks awesome! I have never made layered jello salads before....so did you let the each individual layer set up before adding another?
Kath
Roni you're a genious!! I have to give this a try soon 🙂
Sandy
Oh, that looks yummy - and so beautiful, especially with the berries! I'm defintely going to try this sometime soon!!!
