    Turnips are NOT Disgusting...

    ...even though the Little Guy immediately thought so. I can not believe how fast he's being influenced to think vegetables = gross. I have no doubt that two years ago he would have not reacted the same way. Regardless, I shall not give up. As you'll see in the video, he's willing to try and we still have fun!

      Best turnip recipe ever! I think I did a post on my blog a long time ago. My 11 yr old and 9 yr old beg for this dish.

      German Turnips & Smoked Sausage
      3 turnips, peeled and cubed
      3 potatoes, peeled and cubed
      1 package turkey smoked sausage, sliced
      1 onion, optional
      5 - 7 large carrots, sliced
      1 tbsp honey

      Brown smoked sausage and onion in 1 tbsp of olive oil. Add all vegetables, honey and 1 cup of water. Let cook down until a thick stew type consistency and veggies are tender, about 30 minutes. This is a great stew for winter dinners!

      I have to say, I grew up with some but minimal turnip exposure, because only my mum liked them. They only way we had them was in stews, so long-cooked. I didn't like the texture (soft, almost grainy) nor the taste really. However, it's been a long time since I tried them and I'm intrigued by eating them raw!

      I was raised in the south. Turnips are boiled and mashed or cut up into cubes and added to turnip greens. YUCK ! I hate them like that and don't eat them. But as an adult I found this wonderful turnip recipe. Right now, I have a bag of turnips in my kitchen waiting for this special treatment. I am going to make them and serve them with Vietnamese spring rolls this weekend.

      Spicy Pickled Turnips

      If turnips are young and thin skinned, slice into home fries sized chunks. If turnips are large and have an outer skin, peel and then slice. Make a pickle brine out of rice vinegar, water, sugar, salt. Bring the brine to a boil. In a jar place your sliced turnips, some raw garlic hunks and dried chilies slightly broken up (like Thai chilies). Pour the brine over it, let cool completely and refridgerate. This is not a true pickle recipe because you aren't sanitizing and sealing the jar. Just let it sit in the fridge as long as you can stand it and then dig in! Let me know what you think.

      I got some last year and just cut them up into chunks and put some carrots, sweet potatoes, butternut squash and onions and drizzled some olive oil and spices on (garlic powder and parsley) and put them in the oven at 425 (i think) and they were super yummy. A nice alternative for a side dish.

      we love adding them to my beef roast with other root veggies ~ carrots, potatoes, onions. YUM My 11 year old begs for them, the 8 year old twins won't touch them.

      I always have 3 turnips in my fridge in the fall and winter at all times. Its such a great potato substitute in soups and stews, plus it doesn't fall apart like potatoes do sometimes.

      just went to food network and type in turnips recipes and lots came up. Maybe you want to try that.

      NOT TRY CAME FROM FOOD NETWORK
      Oven-Roasted Root Vegetables
      1 lb. Brussels sprouts, trimmed
      3/4 lb. turnips, peeled, cut into 1-inch chunks
      3/4 lb. sweet potatoes, peeled, cut into 1-inch chunks
      1/2 lb. carrots, peeled, cut into 1-inch chunks
      1/3 cup KRAFT Raspberry Vinaigrette with Poppyseed Dressing made with Extra Virgin Olive Oil
      Make It
      PREHEAT oven to 425°F. Toss vegetables with dressing.
      SPREAD evenly into 15x10x1-inch baking pan sprayed with cooking spray.
      BAKE 45 min. or until vegetables are tender and golden brown, stirring after 30 min.

      I am in the south so Turnip greens are pretty much a staple around here!! The green leaves are so yummy boiled with a bit of bacon. The roots mainly we eat raw on a veggie platter or chop a bit to cook with the greens. Love the mashed idea!

      I have always eaten what they call wax turnip. The ones you are eating looks like a white radish.
      What we did with the wax one was peel and boil them and mix in with white potatoes. they are so good

      Like CindMoore, I've never had the small ones (also live in the PNW), but gosh, I'd love to try them. I've always just eaten the large ones peeled and cut into chunks and used in beef stew. Tamela's mashed turnips with one potato sounds good, too. I think I'll keep an eye out for these.

      p.s. Ryan's laugh just kills me! So funny.

      Loved the way the video ends, it reminded me of the movie "Cloverfield" LOL He almost ate the camera!

      Quick recipe idea: Ground meat, beaten eggs, and shredded turnip. Maybe some shredded carrots also. + Spices, herbs. You'll end up with a very moist hamburger like "dough". Just form the patties and cook them however you want. Yum. And I mean YUM. Makes great meatballs as well. Paleo style 😀

      My mom makes turnips every thanksgiving. She cuts & boils them with one white potato. When they're done, she mashes and seasons, potato and all. It supposedly cuts the bitterness, which I guess is true since I've never found them to be bitter.

      I've only ever eaten turnips raw - the bigger ones from the grocery store which I peel and slice. When they're big they have a pretty tough skin. I've never had small ones like yours R. Did you get the tops too? I think you use those like all the other greens, but have never eaten them. Maybe they're a southern thing? I'm in the Pacific NW 😉

      I've never, ever had a turnip, but now I think I might pick one up when I'm at the store next week. Have you ever tried Kohlrabi? It sounds like they might be similar.

      I would just eat it raw. But I'm boring. : )
