    Produce Pick: Star Fruit (Carambola)

Updated: Aug 22, 2023 by Veronica Noone · This post may contain affiliate links · 14 Comments

    star fruit pin

Do you know what a star fruit is? Maybe you heard of a Carambola? I haven't but I have seen these funning looking fruit in the stores. Normally near the mango, pineapple and weird Asian pears. 🙂 Here's what one looks like cut...

...but I'm getting ahead of myself.

This week the toddler and I decided to pick one of these strange looking fruits for a produce pick. It's been a long time since doing an on camera taste test. The last one we did was the prickly pear waaay back in September!

You'll see in the video, both the toddler and I liked it! We finished the fruit for part of our breakfast and I will be buying them again! Unfortunately I'm a little late, I believe they are just coming out of season and are more popular throughout the winter months.

Nutritionally these babies are powerhouses. One large fruit is under 40 calories, no fat and 3 grams of fiber. It's not an overly sweet fruit (which I liked) so I wasn't surprised to see only 5g of sugar per fruit. According to NutritionData.com, This food is very low in Saturated Fat, Cholesterol and Sodium. It is also a good source of Pantothenic Acid and Potassium, and a very good source of Dietary Fiber, Vitamin C and Copper.

Next time you see one at your local grocery store, give it a try you may be pleasantly surprised like we were!

Ok onto the video! The toddler is quite a hoot in this one, you even get funny faces. Not too mention he launches a few space ships! ;~)

Are there any Carambola fans out there? Do you call it a star fruit? or starfruit? How do eat them?

More info on the star fruit...

So, because of your recommendation and video I decided to try this. I'll admit I wasn't too impressed with it. For some reason I thought it would be sweeter. Anyway, as I was snacking on it I looked up the calories (forgot you had posted it) and when I saw a large was only about 40 calories and 5 grams of sugar, I decided I liked it a little more. haha I'm glad I found a new afternoon snack without worrying about the calories. Thanks!

Okay, I seriously have never laughed that hard at a video about produce before. Ryan was hilarious in this one! [Then again, it's currently 4:45am and I'm exhausted, so that might have something to do with it ...]

I tried starfruit way back in grade school, and I remember I didn't like it very much. But if you say that it's not super sweet, that probably explains it, as I enjoyed sugary things as a child. I might just have to go out and buy one, if I can find them around here, to see how my taste buds have matured ...

are you a freakin' mind reader?! I have been eyeballing this fruit at my supermarket and tempted but at 2.99 a piece I was scared to just "chance it" I was thinking to my self I wish I knew someone who had tried it and liked it then I would be more tempted to go for it....but since you recommend I will have to try it!

I grew up eating lots of starfruit. LOVE THEM! My mom used to cut some up and bring them for snacks when I was younger and I was always the cool girl whose mom brought fruit that looked like stars!

Patty - mild grape-ness to it. Not slimy like a kiwi. At least I think they are slimy. lol

I like to make a fruit salad and put starfruit in it. It's kinda grapey, appley and kiwi-y all in one. I love them! They look cool too.

Always wanted to try this fruit, yet I never have! What would you say it tastes like? The texture looks sort of like a Kiwi, does it taste similar or does it taste pear-like? The site you referenced says they are good with pear juice. Maybe I'll just have to taste one for myself, LOL!

I LOVE star fruit(see there, with a space!). That was my 'try it' fruit last week and it was surprisingly yummy! Its almost like a watermelon and paer put together?

I made your bean dip today and while I thought it was super yummy, it actually got my three year old to eat a carrot! He says carrots are "SO yucky!". My toddler just licked it off 🙂

Ryan is a hoot! He and my three year old would get along smashingly! Bananas are often rocket ships in this house 😛
