Last week I took a trip to my local Wegmans and although I was completely turned off by the hordes of people (this is why I never go) and horrible layout, I'm always impressed by the diversity in its produce department. Â I mean who else carries dragon fruit in Maryland? I don't think I've ever seen it available!
Also known as Pitaya, dragon fruit is mostly found in Southeast Asia, Mexico, Central and South America, and Israel. I think it's also grown in Florida and Hawaii, hence their scarcity up here in the Northeast.
Nutritionally, dragon fruit is low in calories and pretty high in vitamin C.
Join me and The Boys as we try our first bites of dragon fruit. Evan's reaction after realizing there's was no baby dragon inside is priceless!

The problem with Wegmans is less to do with the layout and more to do with the size of the place! I live in upstate NY...grew up here, in fact, and Wegmans used to be a small, normal sized grocery store. They made changes to their produce department based on a local store that used to be a farm stand, which was good, but then they got giant sized. Now, it's impossible to get through it in a short period of time. Also, their parking lots are also terrible. On the plus side, you always get checked out REALLY quickly no matter how busy they are, which is a dealbreaker for me at a lot of stores.

BTW, the awesome local store that Wegmans was modeled after in the early '90's is here: http://www.greenhills.com/

Too funny, I am south of you in MD, and I almost bought dragon fruit on Friday when I saw them at $1/each. There are two of the large Asian chains near m, Lotte and Hmart, which have cheap produce and diverse offerings. The ones closest to you are in Catonsville, if you ever go that way. I love getting persimmons there, and rambutan.

I've been there when I used to work at CCBC. Love that place!

Sorry your kids are so shy, Roni!

I know, right? lmao

Aww, Evan and Ryan just melt my heart. They are such great boys! We've only had dragonfruit flavored beverages so we'll have to give the actual fruit a try if we see it in the market sometime.

It's really rare up here but I heard from Florida friends it's all over the pace down there. Anyway, thanks... I know these boys melt me daily. 🙂
