    Introducing The 2011 GreenLiteBites "Garden"

Updated: Oct 16, 2020 by greenlitebitescom · This post may contain affiliate links · 17 Comments

I haven't grown a vegetable plant in 2 YEARS! I can't believe it's been that long since I wrote this post--> Lessons Learned from my Ugly Garden! That winter we put our house on the market and since moving into the new house I've simply been too busy.

Now I'm ready to try it again and plan on making my "garden" a feature here on GreenLiteBites. I'm starting slow again. I'm quoting "garden" as I'm only planting 4 pots this year but it's something!

    We have a cherry tomato...

Two peppers plants (in the same pot,) one green and one red...

    A zucchini...

and a blueberry bush that I hope to transplant it if flourishes....

(I've tried planting a blueberry bush a few years ago but it died on me. I decided to try it in a pot this year.)

That's it but you have to start somewhere, right? My plan is to post updates on the garden throughout the summer, sharing photos and recipes I make with my home grown fruit/veggies. And my hope is to inspire you to start a garden of your own, even if it's just a pot or two.

Oh! and some of you may remember the Little Guy and I planted apple seeds a few months ago. Click here to see when we planted them and then here for an update I posted a month later.

These little apple trees are very special to me. We planted then when I was pregnant with Little Bean. In a way they've been growing together.

This weekend I transplanted them to a bigger pot and one day I hope to plant them outside. It will be quite a story when both boys are older.

That is IF I don't kill them first--I'll let you decide if I'm talking about the kids or the plants. 😉

Now.... get out their and plant something! I want updates! 🙂

      Hi Roni,

We have blueberry plants. You need at least 2 different varieties for them to flourish. It has something to do with cross pollination I believe. Either way it works!

I am inspired by your no frills pot gardening. I am by no means a gardener, but I do have a teensy bit of space out front that could really use a tomato plant. I have a few herbs out there already which grow back every year (parsley and sage). I try to get cilantro to grow, but it never does... I've had trouble with basil too. So maybe that extra spot is perfect for some tomato this year.

And I also planted a few apple seeds recently! Tayan ate and apple and wanted to plant the seeds--I was truly amazed when they started to grow, and a few weeks ago I transplanted our 2 tiny trees to a big pot. I've been watching them closely. I think I'll put the pot outside for the summer.

10 tomato plants, 1 red bell pepper, 1 yellow bell pepper, 4 green bell peppers, squash, cucumbers, okra, watermelon and canteloupe all planted. Now time to pray for a successful season.

I would LOVE to get out there and plant! It needs to quit raining first!!! lol I have plans to put tomatoes in the flower beds on the South side of the house.( Maybe some strawberries too....) Nothing beats a garden fresh tomato and I'm tired of begging them from my Mom and Mother In Law. 🙂 It's our first summer here and hubby is trying to reclaim the backyard from weeds and moles. Maybe I can steal a little land next year.

      Hi Roni,

Love the pictures! I to am trying my hand at some in single pots and a raised garden, Tomatoes, Strawberries, broccili, green & red peppers, cucumbers, cantalope, and finally beans. I hope I can get some veggies from mine however one of the main reasons I have done this is to get outside and help me to relax. I look forward to seeing your progress with your plants! Thanks for the post!

      Roni,
Your baby looks like he's getting big! We just put out our container herb garden and are doing a raised bed garden too. Here are the posts from these. I'm not so confident about the veggies, but I've been growing herbs successfully for years and LOVE using them in my cooking. The kids love to participate, too.
      Happy gardening..........Nimali (Doctor Yum)

Wow Roni I think you inspired me to grow some veggies!! I never did before!! What size pot are you using?? I have to grow them in a pot because I live in a condo and have no land for a garden.

Roni, I don't think blueberries are self-fertile. You may need to plant a second one of a different variety if you want fruit. That's what all my research has indicated anyway. Good luck with the garden. Nothing better than grazing in your own yard!

I still haven't got to the garden this year. I live in Washington state. Every time I think it's safe to plant it snows, or freezes, or hails or won't stop raining so I can plant. We'll get there =)I can't wait to see all your recipe ideas.

My husband planted a mulberry seed in a pot the day we had our son. He is about to turn 8 and we now have a 5 foot mulberry tree in our yard. It makes me smile every time I look at it. We kept it in a pot until a few years ago when we moved to our permanent home. I was so scared when my hubby planted it in the yard, but it has flourished.

Wow, sounds like a great idea! I can't believe you had time to start a new little garden along with a new baby and a conference coming up! Have you heard of square foot gardening? A friend is starting one this year and told me about it. I considered trying to do it but finally decided that it wasn't the most practical thing for me at this time. However maybe I would have time to to just start one little potted plant. I know absolutely nothing about gardening, but I really would love to have one someday. I'll be anxious to hear updates about how things are growing.

Love the apple tree idea! Wow - I'm doing the same thing this year with a pot garden. Got the pots/soil/plants over the weekend and now I have to wait until Memorial Day to plant them (I live pretty far north). I'll be planting the sugar snap peas tonight though, those are hardy and can take the cooler temps at night. Can't wait to try some new recipes! 🙂 Hope your garden is a success!

      The baby is adorable!

Do peppers need a lot of sunlight? Lack of all day sun is the only thing keeping me from a vegetable garden.
