I'm really into the smoothies right now. Normally I run on an empty stomach but being 2 and half months pregnant, that's just not working for me anymore. So now I make a quick smoothie, get some good healthy fruit in and it gives me just enough energy to enjoy a run without getting cramps or feeling nauseous.
This weekend I stocked up on tons of fresh fruit and it inspired me to try some new flavors. Normally I use yogurt or milk as my liquid but I wasn't in the mood for 'creamy' I wanted something more...
more... 'refreshing'. There was only one problem. I don't have any juice.
I rarely buy juice. It's just something that i tend to go overboard on so I stay away. Plus when there's juice in the house the little guy will always pick that over water, always. Without it in the house... water is his go to and a much better choice in my opinion. I think we--as in the collective we--drink way too much sugar filled drinks these days and that includes 100% juices. So our house rule is to save the "treat drinks" for when we are out because Lord knows everyone is always ready to give your kid juice of some sort. Although Ryan usually asks for chocolate milk. One of my favorites as well. 🙂
Anyway... I'm awfully chatty this morning, let me get back to this smoothie. Since I didn't have any juice I decided to brew some tea and use that as the liquid base. Not to pat myself on the back but... this was GENIUS! I happen to have mango flavored green tea and it was the PERFECT compliment to this passion fruit smoothie. Here's what I did...
Ingredients
- About â…“ cup fresh cut pineapple (70g)
- ½ banana
- About â…“ of a cup fresh papaya (40g)
- 1 mango flavored green tea bag
- 4 oz of boiling water
- ice cubes
Instructions
Prep your fruit and brew your tea with about 4 oz of water. Let the tea bag steep for at least 2 minutes and then fill the tea cup with about 5 ice cubes to cool down the tea.
Add the cooled tea and a few more ice cubes to the fruit and BLEND!
Then enjoy!
As you can see... my little guy is becoming quit the ham.
He really did like this smoothie. I warned him I was going to finish it and he came running in from the living room saying, "No, no. Save me some!" Always a good sign. 😉

Hi Roni,
Something else I'm using as a smoothie base right now is coconut water. Apparently, this is packed with nutrients and has the same electrolytes as our blood plasma.
Hardly any calories (approx. 65 per serving) and no fat.
In the US you can buy ONE, Zico or VitaCoco brands that have no sugar added.
OR you can buy young, green coconuts and extract the water yourself.
If you google it, you'll come up with all sorts of info on it.

I probably mentioned this before, but you should try a Green Smoothie. You can keep your recipe, but add spinach. With all the flavor of the fruit you don't taste the spinach and it adds lots of vitamins. I love the green tea idea. Gotta try it now. Thanks.

This is the best idea! I drink smoothies every morning, and I ran out of milk yesterday which is my usualy base, so I made a green tea one! I brewed the tea and added a peach, banana, and some fresh mango. It was very refreshing and a great alternative to my normal smoothies! Such a great idea!

I was a little worried... when I poured it in it was more then I thought but the bullet pulled through! 🙂

Hey Jana!
It's the magic bullet! or as my son says... Boooolet. 😉

What a great idea! I love tea, of any variety and I hate adding sugary juices to my smoothies!! I don't ever fill my mug up that full though when I blend with my bullet, always fearful it will burst out! Have you ever had that issue? If not I'm gonna fill mine up more!! Thanks for the great recipe!!

I second Josie's suggestion about the decaf tea. I don't have kids but my mom has been making decaf tea for years and I loved it as a kid. Now that I'm an adult I drink it all the time and its so refreshing and sometimes I just want something other than water that doesn't have the calories.
Jana
Hey what kind of blender is that?

I must try this although banana does not do well with my stomach. I must find something to replace that bulk it gives...hmmm...must experiment

Crystal - I thought the mango flavored green tea added a wonderful "freshness" to it. It's hard to explain. It's definitely all fruit tasting.

This does sound refreshing...I've never even thought about using green tea. Does it taste very tea-ish, or does the fruit make it sweeter? I'm not a tea drinker, haha

This looks so healthy! What a great way to get in your required servings of fruit in the morning.

I usually go for the fruit, non-fat greek yogurt, soy milk, almond butter combo to help me get my dairy in. I do like the idea of green tea as a base though and will have to give that a try.

I completely agree with the whole juice thing! My little guy loves water and has it 95 percent of the time, and is perfectly healthy. The time he does drink juice, its because someone insists that he needs it because "he needs to drink something with substance." -_-
Anyways! This smoothie sounds delicious, I will definitely keep it in mind next time there is no almond milk around. 🙂

What a great idea!

ok, changed it to "Tropical" maybe that was the word I was thinking of. 😉

OMG SO funny I was thinking "passion fruits" not "passion fruit" for some reason I call papaya, pineapple and such "passion fruits". Guess I should change the name. huh?

Looks really good! My only question is, where's the passion fruit?

My daughter loves smoothies for breakfast, I add light choc. soy milk to hers and the protein keeps her energized and full for the morning in preschool. I completely agree with the juice, I usually brew a big pitcher of Decaf Ice Tea (there's a lot of different flavors and teas in decaf! I was shocked!) in the fridge for the week. My 4 yr. old considers that her juice lol
