I'm really into the smoothies right now. Normally I run on an empty stomach but being 2 and half months pregnant, that's just not working for me anymore. So now I make a quick smoothie, get some good healthy fruit in and it gives me just enough energy to enjoy a run without getting cramps or feeling nauseous.
This weekend I stocked up on tons of fresh fruit and it inspired me to try some new flavors. Normally I use yogurt or milk as my liquid but I wasn't in the mood for 'creamy' I wanted something more... more... 'refreshing'. There was only one problem. I don't have any juice.
I rarely buy juice. It's just something that i tend to go overboard on so I stay away. Plus when there's juice in the house the little guy will always pick that over water, always. Without it in the house... water is his go to and a much better choice in my opinion. I think we--as in the collective we--drink way too much sugar filled drinks these days and that includes 100% juices. So our house rule is to save the "treat drinks" for when we are out because Lord knows everyone is always ready to give your kid juice of some sort. Although Ryan usually asks for chocolate milk. One of my favorites as well. 🙂
Anyway... I'm awfully chatty this morning, let me get back to this smoothie. Since I didn't have any juice I decided to brew some tea and use that as the liquid base. Not to pat myself on the back but... this was GENIUS! I happen to have mango flavored green tea and it was the PERFECT compliment to this passion fruit smoothie. Here's what I did...
- About ⅓ cup fresh cut pineapple (70g)
- ½ banana
- About ⅓ of a cup fresh papaya (40g)
- 1 mango flavored green tea bag
- 4 oz of boiling water
- ice cubes
Prep your fruit and brew your tea with about 4 oz of water. Let the tea bag steep for at least 2 minutes and then fill the tea cup with about 5 ice cubes to cool down the tea.
Add the cooled tea and a few more ice cubes to the fruit and BLEND!
As you can see... my little guy is becoming quit the ham.
He really did like this smoothie. I warned him I was going to finish it and he came running in from the living room saying, "No, no. Save me some!" Always a good sign. 😉
