Making Kale Chips

Posted in: Toddler Approved, Video Posts | 33 Comments

Yes, you read the correctly. KALE CHIPS and guess what. The little guy LIKED them. He didn’t think he would. He gave me some crap (off camera) about not wanting to try them because they are green. I have NO idea where that came from but he did try them and, well, you’ll see his reaction. It’s cute.

As for me, I don’t think I’ll ever NOT pick up a bunch of kale when I go grocery shopping ever again. I’m serious. Trying this idea may change my nighttime snacking for the better. It takes a total of 15 minutes to clean and bake up this crispy snack and the best part, a cup of this kale chips are only about 50 calories! I’ll write up and recipe with official nutritional information and Weight Watcher points the next time I make them. I want to take some pictures, weigh out the Kale and get more specific but seriously people.. it’s KALE chips. I say… eat away! :)

Im super glad you guys liked these! My little ones ALWAYS make sure we get Kale at the market! My little girl is 6 and she says that it reminds her of seaweed…LOL

I’ve been seeing kale chips around various blogs for the last few years and have never tried them! Your video has inspired me to give them a try this week. They look so good and really, if a kid thinks they’re great, they must be!

  9. Lola on February 16, 2010 8:00 pm

I am so glad you tried this! I had seen Kath do them so often but I could not imagine them being good…but OMG – they are so freakin’ good. And the best part – they take up LOTS of space on a plate (volumetrics). :o)

  10. Krista on February 16, 2010 8:42 pm

I eat them like french fries and dip them in ketchup! I love them in ketchup!

  11. Debbi on February 16, 2010 11:00 pm

I have seen these so many times that I have now GOT to try them!

  12. Melody on February 17, 2010 1:40 pm

    Roni,
Thanks for being brave enough to try these before me and report back. I’ve been curious for a while. Will probably try making them tonight. I found some kale at Publix, but had to look closely. You were totally right. They carry it but it’s not really labeled well since I guess most folks don’t pick up Kale all the time! Had to really look for the style of leaf I saw in the video.

I can’t wait to try it. I hope it’s tasty to my family and myself! I LOVE chips, and they are my biggest weakness right now.

Tried these tonight – they are AMAZING. I made them with garlic salt and I’m currently suffering from major garlic/kale breath at the moment. Oops. :)

One of my Twitter followers mentioned that he makes kale chips with Bacon Salt and says they’re GREAT. I may have to pick some up and try it. :)

  14. Marla on February 18, 2010 12:47 am

Made these tonight and the whole family liked them. What is your suggestion for storing these and how long they might last? We’re planning a camping trip and I need nutritious alternatives.

  15. roni on February 18, 2010 7:43 am

Marla – I’ve never stored them but I’d simply try an air tight container. Maybe use a little less or no oil?!? Once they are dehydrated they should stay that way unless there is a lot of moister in the air but I’m just speculating. Let me know how you make out!

  16. McLauren84 on February 18, 2010 3:49 pm

Awesome! I tried to make some kale a couple months ago and didn’t really plan it out beforehand; it wasn’t that good, so I haven’t tried it again since. I’ll definitely be making this soon!

  17. Agnes on February 19, 2010 1:38 pm

Roni, you guys are so cute! Thanks for the inspiration. Once again you prove that being a Mom and being fit and healthy is totally achievable! Thanks! Oh and the kale chips were great!

  18. Jamie on February 20, 2010 8:48 pm

I made these the other night…so good. Had some leftovers and stored them in a sealed container. They got just a little soft so I just popped some back in the oven for a few minutes….just as good as before especially when I tossed them in balsamic vinegar…yummy

  19. roni on February 21, 2010 7:48 am

balsamic vinegar. What a genius idea! I’ll have to try that!

  20. Meghan on February 21, 2010 4:14 pm

Just made these. So good! I added a little garlic powder. Def have to try it with balsamic next time!

  21. Jane on February 21, 2010 9:52 pm

Thank you! What a great idea :)

  22. Sue on February 22, 2010 8:12 am

Looks great – can’t wait to get some kale & try them. Hopefully I can replace my addiction to potato chips.
Note on cleaning veggies. Grapefruit Seed Extract has lots of great uses including cleaning veggies. Use only 20 drops in 32 oz. water. I used an old glass vinegar bottle with the sprayer I took from a plastic bottle or adjust amounts and soak veggies in bowl. I have only a 4 oz. container of grapefruit seed extract and it lasts forever.

  23. Puglet on February 25, 2010 10:07 pm

Just made them today. We ate a huge bunch of kale which would have taken us forever to eat in a different form. These are super easy and you eat them like they are potato chips! This is such a great idea. Do you think the nutrition is retained by baking?

  24. roni on February 26, 2010 8:49 pm

Puglet – I would guess it is. I mean it’s got to be better then boiling the crap out of it like so many people do. No?

  25. Mary on February 28, 2010 4:17 pm

Made a bunch today – Great taste and yummie – thanks for the inspiration! I loved your video!

  26. penny on March 2, 2010 6:50 am

We also found kale chips recently and like you I buy a bunch of kale every week. I make kale chips on Sunday after grocery shopping and they are gone by Sunday night!

Great snack and a great way to incorporate super healthy kale into your diet!!

  27. Ashley on March 2, 2010 1:13 pm

Thank you so much for trying this out. I’ve been wanting to do this for a long time. I tried making kale chips last night and they were awesome! My grocery store has kale right now on sale $1.00 a bunch so I can make lots and lots of chips. Hahaha!

  28. Sally on March 8, 2010 7:40 pm

I just made these today and they were SO good! The taste reminded me of fried cauliflower. My mom even liked them and she never likes anything healthy that i make lol. I will definitely be buying kale again. Thanks for being so brave ;P lol

  29. Puglet on March 10, 2010 10:55 am

Well, I made these again. This time I seasoned them with Old Bay. They disappeared like magic. I used the same olive oil and baking technique with broccoli, sprinkled it with parmesan cheese, stirred it while it bakes for about 15 minutes.

  30. Stacey on March 10, 2010 2:57 pm

I just made these – and they’re great! Perfect for my salt cravings! Thanks!

  31. Amanda on March 14, 2010 12:22 pm

Made these the other night and the husband and I LOVED them! The entire batch was gone in half an hour–NO LIE!!!

It was my first time to eat kale and I WILL be making this again. Thank you Roni!!! :)

  32. Tony on March 15, 2010 9:26 am

I also made these this weekend. They are very good but the after taste is a bit….weird/strong. None the less, I will continue to make these as my whole family enjoyed them.

  33. kristina on March 16, 2010 10:34 am

I made these a few times..found the recipe on another blog and when re-heating them in the toaster oven during a feeding therapy session…they caught on Fire!!! But yes, they are delicious!!! Love the tart lemon flavor yum!
