Homemade Apple Pie Oatmeal

Posted in: Breakfast Ideas, Food Photos, Toddler Approved, Vegetarian Ideas, Video Posts | 21 Comments

WAAAAY back when, I posted Apple Pie Oatmeal. The idea pre-dates GreenLiteBites as it was originally posted on Roni’s Weigh (which at the time was Weight Watchen–Holy crap I’ve been blogging for awhile!) Anyway, I had a craving for the original Apple Pie Oatmeal but since I no longer buy the flavored packets of oatmeal I had to recreate it using rolled oats.

I think this version is actually better. It has less ingredients (compared to the packet), it’s cheaper (you can now use the oatmeal in bulk,) it’s not as sweet and I just love being independent of products. :)

As you can see the toddler loved it and he’s in rare form in the video. He’s becoming VERY vocally expressive. Not that he wasn’t always but he just seems to have so much more to say these last few weeks. I tried to keep it short but you’ll see, he tends to distract me a bit. If you do decide to watch it you’ll have to stay to the end, he does another one of his secret taste tests again (like he did with the tabasco in the the Tortilla Soup Video-A YEAR ago!)

Scroll below the video for the recipe.

Homemade Apple Pie Oatmeal

  • 1/2 cup (40g) Old Fashioned Oats
  • 6oz water
  • 1 packet sweetener (I used Truvia)
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce

Put the oats, water, sweetener and cinnamon in a small pot over medium high heat. Cook and stir until water is absorbed. About 5 minutes.

Mix the cooked oatmeal with applesauce.

Sprinkle a bit more cinnamon on top for effect.

EAT! :)

Oooh. I am LOVING Truvia. This oatmeal looks delicious.

Oh my goodness! Your son had me laughing so much! (especially at the end when he tasted the cinnamon stick) LOL!

The recipe sounds and looks great. Unfortunately, I’d have to make my own applesause. UK applesauce is very different than US applesauce.

I LOVE THIS IDEA! This is one of my favorites – I saw the original post and used it all the time in 2007 when I was losing weight for my wedding! So glad you brought it back with a video!

Also – the toddler saying ‘hey guys’ to tell us it was foggy – made my heart melt. Too damn cute!

I saw on Oprah just the other day an episode where some TV chefs moved in with viewers. In one of them, I believe it was Tyler Florence that suggested to cook oatmeal in apple juice. I immediately remembered this oatmeal recipe from way back when.

doesn’t cooking it in apple juice sound very interesting???

Roni, I tried this recipe and LOVE it. Just like Apple Pie! It’s total comfort food without the added calories. I agree with what you said about the unsweetened applesauce. There are so many foods out there with un-needed added sugar. I wish I had never acquired a taste for them. I am slowly retraining my taste buds. I am glad your kiddo gets to experience foods the nutritious way way! It could be his generation that changes the food industry for the better.

    Roni,

Very cute, i’ve never commented on one of your video posts before, but this one had me laughing out loud. I was wondering what would happen after i heard Ryan crunching on the cinammon stick.

Thanks for the laughs & all the great videos.

    Roni,

I will definitely be adding this to my oats rotation! I have to say that my favorite part of the video was watching Ryan’s brain work while putting together that he was holding the cinammon stick and that there was one on the top of the applesauce package – amazing! You could see his sharp little mind working!!! Thanks for another great video!!!

Delicious!!! I changed it around a little and now it tastes like apple pie with vanilla ice cream. Here is what I did:
    1/4 C oatmeal
    3 oz water
    1/4 t. cinnamon
    1/4 C apple sauce
1/4 C low fat vanilla yogurt

    Delicious!!

OMG, Roni. Your little guy is awesome. Thank you for the recipe – but even more for the dose of little boyness! The end bit where he eats the cinnamon stick is priceless!!!

We tried this today and 2 out of 3 loved it. Even my non-oatmeal eating son liked it. I’m making it again tomorrow to see how my Other Half likes it. And I just might try it with a dollop of low fat vanilla yogurt like “Nicki” suggested. YUM!

I was laughing so much with this video! My 5 year old was laughing too with the knock knock jokes “int he toilet” that was just the best in his opinion….it actually was pretty funny! lol and the cinnamon stick taste test was such a great way to end it! I am still chuckling.

I am gonna make this right now….its dinner time but I could so go for this =) I ate the tortilla pizza for lunch and apple pie oatmeal for dinner….or since I have quite a few points left maybe a pre dinner snack =D

I love this recipe. I have been trying to find something I like so I can stop using the packet stuff, and now I have! Even better I found this just one day after reading that oatmeal could help increase my milk supply. Thank you!! Do you think it would work if I made a larger batch and put in fridge and brought to work and reheated?

  14. Shelly Terrell on March 28, 2009 8:54 pm

I make something like this but I use homemade applesauce.

Homemade applesauce is so much better than store bought. You can even make up a couple batches and store them in the frig so morning time is faster since it’s already made (that’s what I do).

I have a very simple homemade applesauce recipe on my blog:

Lesley – I’m not that will work. I’m thinking it may be too gluey. If you try it you’ll have to let me know!

  16. roni on March 28, 2009 9:02 pm

Shelly – I know have homemade applesauce on the list! Can’t wait to try it! :)

  17. Shelly Terrell on March 28, 2009 9:11 pm

    Lesley,

I have re-heated oatmeal before. You just need to add a bit more water as you re-heat. Amount wil depend on how much you have, just add a bit at a time. It still comes out good :)

    Hello Roni,
I wanted to share with you what I do with my oatmeal. I peel and thinly slice an apple, add water to it and microwave for a few minutes, then I add approx 1/2 cup of oatmeal the mixture will be very thick, to this I add approx 1/2 cup of fat free vanilla yogurt and cinnamon. I find it makes a nice breakfast and is filling.

I saw thsi post months ago and its pretty much my everyday bfast…..I was looking at it again today and I am wondering how you figure 4 points I have always figured 3; 2 for the oatmeal and 1 for the applesauce. Hopefully I have not been figuring it wrong for months =D

  20. Theresa on August 3, 2009 1:51 pm

I make it the pretty much the same except I dice up an apple instead of applesauce!

I also make a Blueberry Muffin Oatmeal!

    1/2c Quaker Old fashioned oats
    1/4c Blueberries (I use frozen)
    1tsp Brown Sugar
    1tsp Vanilla
    Cinnamon to taste

jenna – I do point calcs on total calories/fat/fiber it’s just my choice and I find they usually come out higher. I’m a big believer in rounding up.

You aren’t wrong at all. I’m just overly cautious! :)
