Chocolate Oatmeal Walnut Cookies

I haven’t been this excited about a recipe in a long time. I was a on mission to create a healthier cookie that ACTUALLY tasted good and I think I did it. I actually did it. To accomplish it I had to resort to using sugar and butter, two things I haven’t used in a recipe for a l-o-n-g time. Of course I severely reduced them but using some was inevitable to make a tasty cookie.

I can’t lie I love these cookies. I’ve made a few batches getting things just right and MAN they are awesome right out of the oven. I’m a warm cookie gal all the way. Give me a gooey chocolate cookie out of the oven and I’m in heaven and these cookies TOTALLY hit the spot.

Anyway, I was so excited about them the toddler and I made a batch for this weeks video. Baking with him is one of my absolute favorite things to do and when he’s taste testing whole wheat and oatmeal cookie dough I think it makes it all the better. :)

The Recipe

Chocolate Oatmeal Walnut Cookies

  • 1 cup whole wheat white flour (120g)
  • 1/4 cup baking cocoa (20g)
  • 1 cup old fashioned oats (80g) (ground or unground your choice)
  • 3/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup raw sugar
  • 1 tbsp molasses (20g)
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 oz fat free cream cheese
  • 1 and 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup chopped walnuts, toasted (30g)
  • 1/4 cup 56g mini chips

Preheat oven to 350°.

Combine flour, cocoa, oats, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Set aside.

Place the sugar, butter and cream cheese in a bowl and beat with a mixer at medium-high speed until well blended. Add vanilla and egg beat again until blended finishing the wet ingredients.

Gradually add the flour mixture to the wet ingredients, beating at low speed just until combined. It will be REALLY thick. Once all the dry ingredients are incorporated stir in walnuts and chocolate chips as best you can.

Drop dough by tablespoonfuls onto baking sheets sprayed with non-stick cooking spray or lined with parchment paper. The dough will be sticky, try to flatten a bit as the dough will not melt as much as traditional chocolate chip cookies. Makes at least 36 cookies (3 dozen).

Bake at 350° for 12 minutes or until edges of cookies are lightly browned. Cool for about 2 minutes before enjoying the warm cookie! :)

To make more festive or involve the kids more, add sprinkles just before baking!

    Yum, those cookies look good!! I think I see a batch of those in my future. Love the video as usual. Ryan is so cute and such a good helper! You are getting very good at the video-thing, “they” should really put you on t.v.

    I plan to try this recipe using whey-low instead of sugar – the recipe will lose another 300 calories. I’d love it if you’d try this product, Roni (or have you already?). I’ve been a fan of it for a year now.

    These look great. I’ve been looking for a lightened version of chocolate chip cookies, it’s hard to get a good one, as you know. I made cranberry and white chocolate cookies with some cinnamon sugar for a festive cookie, and may try that with a non-chocolate version of these cookies.

    Ryan is sooooooooo cute in this video. He is becoming quite the little sous chef and a real natural in front of the camera. I wish I had a little helper like that to bake with!

    Man I can’t wait to try these! Ryan was a hoot to watch..what an awesome helper and he’s so darn funny, too. Also, when I make drop cookies, I use two spoons…one to scoop and one to scoot the dough off onto the tray.


    ok there in the oven it was not easy mixer died lol so finished blending by hand wow that was hard but the batter taste good wow they are great warm i haven’t had a cookie in a month now i can wow thank you

    Made these this afternoon and they are great! I added 30 g of chopped raisins to the mix. I only got 33 cookies, but I think I made them a bit bigger than yours. Oops! I used my KitchenAid stand mixer to mix the dough and it was easy peasy! Thanks for such a great recipe, Roni. My family loves these.

    They look wonderful, Roni. I may make them tomorrow with my grandsons, Jax(5) and Jovan (2). You were talking about making more kinds of cookies for Christmas, and I know that you eat the meringue cookies from Trader Joes…and you have a chocolate meringue recipe. Have you seen or heard about the white meringue peppermint cookie in the new Diana (from Curves) magazine yet? I picked up one of the new mags last night….however, it’s at home and I’m at work. If you’re interested, I can type it out and send it to you. They look wonderful, and I’m planning to make some…if I can find the time.

    Wow, these are awesome. I used regular chocolate chips (used less), 1/4 cup raisins, added a few teaspoons of applesauce, and used 1 tablespoon of sucanat and a teaspoon of honey in place of molasses. I can’t believe how good these are! Thank you for all of the creative, healthy recipes, Roni!

    I’m curious, have you ever experimented with biscotti? I love it, and am looking for a low calorie healthy recipe that I don’t feel guilty dunking in my coffee for an evening snack as I sit down to watch Lost. ;)

    Think I’m gonna make these today, but my kids don’t like nuts so I’m gonna have to omit them. Do you think it would change the point value much? I’m on WW so if I can squeeze in an extra cookie for myself that would be good too…

    Ummm I don’t think so. they may be slightly under 2 instead of slightly above. :) I’d still count them as 2 though. Hope you like them!

    Hey Roni! I’m so glad I stumbled on your website! Both your weight loss blog and this food blog are great! I’m turning into a cookie/baking snob! How can I go back to 2 sticks of butter per recipe when I can make this one with only 2 Tablespoons?!
    Anyway, I made this version last night and they taste so good.
    I’m going to make a 2nd batch tonight with one substitute- white chocolate chips. I think it will look pretty and taste just as yummy. We’ll see what the hubby thinks.

    Roni- Just made these. Delicious! In your instructions you don’t mention the molasses. I know it goes in with the wet, but thought you may want to add to the instruction.

    I made these Friday and my husband LOVES them!! The cookies are long gone, and he’s asked me to make another batch. I love them as well, so I’m about to bake another batch this morning, and this time I’m going to increase the amount of walnuts.
