Nuts Allowed in Preschool Lunch?

  • Leftover broccoli
  • Canned kidney beans, rinsed and drained
  • Almond butter sandwich on a whole wheat potato bun

What Came Home?

Nuts and nut butters are always tough in school situations. Ryan’s preschool was completely nut free, limiting our lunch options. Now that he’s in public school they have a nut-free table, which lets me send him in with a PB&J or a side of almonds now and then, although he usually request no nuts so he can sit with all his friends.

Evan’s situation is a little different as his day care is much smaller. They haven’t yet had a child with allergies in the toddler room and nut products have been allowed. I’m sure this will change as they grow but in the meantime I appreciate the flexibility to send him in with almond butter sandwiches or a side of cashews, both of which he loves giving me a bit more flexibility.

This lunch surprisingly went over well considering he’s been hit or miss in the broccoli department recently.

That's nice that they tell you exactly what he ate. My daycare just says whether he ate well, sort of okay, or not well.

I have the same experience, Christine! My daughter will just tell me if she ate well or she actually didn't like her lunch. It's really tough sometimes. I guess Roni did great with her kid. :-)

I don't have kids so I had no idea some schools were nut free. Makes sense as I was eating peanuts one day in college and a girl sitting next to me started having hives. I think I found your blog through Mark's Daily Apple. Keep up the good work.

Did you mean to use their real names? I don't think I've seen you do that before.

I did. It gets too confusing talking about the past with their present ages. Plus their names aren't a secret I just limit my use of them so they aren't plastered all over the web. Although it's a little late for that. lol

I wish this blog was around 15 years ago when my oldest was in Kindergarten. It would have been nice having the school lunch ideas.
