Before having kids I swore I would not cut crusts off for my kids because it is wasteful. Then my otherwise-not-picky at all son came along and did not like crusts. I have found the same thing as another poster--that I can trim a fraction of the sandwich instead of my kids leaving a full inch of crust. I don't think it is a big deal since they are very good eaters and there are a lot of cute sandwich cutters out there that make lunch fun!

I think it's a texture thing for some people. We fight over the heel on bread loaves in my family but we're unusual anyway. :)

We can work so hard as parents to ensure our kids eat healthy and balanced meals but all it takes is that one kid showing up for lunch with ding dong and dorritos and it's all over... sigh.

I always hated crusts as a kid, especially on the firmer whole grain breads, because they hurt my mouth. Maybe I have a tender mouth, but to this day, if I eat crusts or very crispy snacks or cereal, I end up with a sore mouth.

I have to tell that the country I live in (In North Europe) I have never seen anybody leaving the crust. I guess it really is what you are used to. If you haven't ever seen the crust cut off you don't even realize to think about it.

I was a hard core 'leave the crust on' kind of person until I realized that my kids eat more sandwich if I trim off the edges. My trimming is like 1/16 of an inch off the bread. They leave a good full inch of bread with the crust.

its definately crazy. But I used to find that with my daycare kiddos, if I bought the "buttertop" or similar type bread, the crust is not as dark and thin. Fools them a bit. Now I make all our bread from scratch and I use a rectangle pan that has a lid on it. My bread comes out perfectly square and NO CRUST to be seen :o)

Okay, I'm just spitballing here: maybe make a sandwich that's nothing but crust. Or maybe hot glue the crust to a candy bar. Or tell him that the crust provide magical powers. Okay... WHAT'S THE NEXT PROBLEM!
