Bacon Cheese Inside Out Turkey Burgers

I love experimenting with fun turkey burger ideas because, let’s be honest, a plain turkey burger is kind of boring. I either want a juicy, simple beef burger OR a flavor-filled turkey burger. Either works for me. :)

Today I was inspired by a traditional bacon cheeseburger. I had some 99% lean turkey defrosted and a couple of Mini Babybel light rounds, which melt fabulously!

Bacon Cheese Inside Out Turkey Burgers I decided to add some grated zucchini to bulk them up and help the moisture factor as lean turkey can be dry. The result was tasty! They weren’t as flavorful as I thought they would be, but the texture was perfect. Next time I may reduce the zucchini and add some minced onion and garlic. Here’s the base idea, take it and run… :)

  • 8oz extra-lean ground turkey (I had the 99% lean kind)
  • 1/2 cup grated zucchini (100g)
  • 4 tbsp real bacon bits (28g)
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 egg
  • 3/4 cup old-fashioned oats (60g)
  • Pinch of kosher salt and ground black pepper
  • 2 The Laughing Cow Mini Babybel® Light Rounds (or 1 1/2 oz of your favorite cheese)

Put all the ingredients in a bowl except the cheese.

Mix well. The mixture will be moist.

Separate the meat mixture into 4 equal parts of about 4 oz. each. Now take 1 of the 4 oz. portions and separate into 2 small patties.

Open a Babybel round.

Cut it in half lengthwise…

making two circles.

Place one of the cheese circles in the center of a small patty.

Top with the other patty and form together.

Repeat for the other 3 burgers.

Grill the burgers about 6 minutes a side. They will stick, especially if the grill isn’t hot enough. Use nonstick spray or rub the grill with a bit of oil to help.

I ate mine on a new VitaBun with some baby spinach and a squirt of ketchup. It was perfect!

Here’s an inside shot. It came out moist and cheesy!

    What a brilliant idea! I am a huge turkey burger fan but I have yet to experiment with them on my own. I will definitely be trying this in the near future! I also really like the idea of using an english muffin as a bun :). Thanks!

    Looks delicious…not sure about the oats, though. Is it for texture? For the healthy addition? What would be the drawback of not having them?

    I add oats to most of my ground turkey ideas. It bulks them up and helps hold on to moisture as they tend to dry out. Especially the 99% fat free kind. You can run the oats through a processor, then they are just like breadcrumbs.

    It’s no different then adding breadcrumbs to meatballs or meatloaf. That’s what gave me the idea.

    I’m looking at this on my mobile and originally thought the ketchup was cranberry sauce! I will definitely be making these… With a cranberry sauce addition… Something about cranberry and turkey – they were just made for each other! Love the oats as a breadcrumbs substitute! I’ll be trying that as a replacement for crumbs in the future – think they would be good with some Italian seasonings just like regular bread crumbs? Yum! Thanks for the inspiration as always!!

    Based on your recipe I made turkey pizza burgers tonight – yum! Instead of bacon and worcestershire I used Italian seasoning and tomato paste and substituted the Babybel for some fresh mozzarella I had to use up and added turkey pepperoni slices to the top. Served over a bed of spinach with a dab of homemade pesto on top. And I still have 1/2 the turkey left to try the bacon cheeseburgers you suggested! Thanks for your inspiration! :-)

    I made these last night and they were divine! I didn’t have the babybel so I used laughing cow cheese wedges. I just gut them in half. I also used 97% lean beef. My hubs charred them a bit but they were still good. Instead of ketchup we added a bit of smokey bbq :O) Thanks for the great burger, next i’ll try the herb one!

    just prepped this – did everything the same but with 16oz of 93/7 turkey, 1/3 whole wheat bread crumbs, 1oz reduced monterey jack per burger (8pts+) – thanks so much for the idea!!!! – we can’t wait to sink our teeth into them :)

    I have celiac disease and came upon this website and decided to try as many of the delicious looking and healthy recipes on this site adjusting the recipes to G free.

    We just tried it tonight using Bob’s Red Mill Gluten free old fashioned rolled oats. I ground up about 1/4 of the oats to help the burgers stay together a little bit better.

    My sweet husband who will eat anything that is put in front of him thus is also on a G Free diet LOVED the burgers. Thanks for the delicious recipe!!!!!

    I just have a question! For 4 patties do you use 16 oz of lean turkey and the rest of the ingredients are right? I’m confused!

    No, just 8 oz. The ingredient list is correct. Not sure how else to help. You end up with 4 patties but I’m making 2 small patties for each (totalling 8) to make getting the cheese in easier. Does that help?
