You may not know this about me but I am a turkey burger fanatic. There’s nothing wrong with a traditional burger but I like using ground turkey as a starter for some more fun ideas. So far I’ve come up with…

All good, all different, yet all burgers! I love that. So when Kathy sent me an awesome recipe for Pineapple Chutney Turkey Burgers and I knew I had to give it a try.

There was only one problem, the day I decided to make them I realized I didn’t have any pineapple. *sigh* I’m such a bad recipe follower, I really am.

BUT.. it worked out anyway because these came out FANTASTIC! Such a fantastic fall burger recipe. The smells were divine!Pineapple, NO I mean Apple, Chutney Turkey Burger

So I thought I’d share how I made them and then the original recipe as Kathy sent it to me. That way you can get lots of ideas on how to make them your own.

  • 1 large apple chopped (I left the skin on)
  • 1 small onion chopped
  • 1/8 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1 small red pepper or half a large chopped
  • 1 cloves garlic, minced
  • squirt of brown mustard (about 2 tsp)
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp ground ginger
  • 8 oz of lean ground turkey (93% or higher)
  • 1 bunch of parsley chopped
  • Kosher Salt
  • Ground Pepper

Combine the apple, onion, vinegar, pepper, garlic, mustard, cinnamon, ginger and about 2 pinches of salt in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a boil and then reduce to low. Simmer for 45 minutes to an hour. It may not look like enough liquid at first but it’ll still boil and reduce. If it’s really too dry, add another splash of vinegar.

After the hour let the chutney cool by placing it in the fridge.

Once cooled combine the chutney, parsley and ground turkey with a pinch of salt and pepper.

Form into 2-3 patties. I made 3 as I actually like a smaller patty so I can add more “stuff” to my burger. :) Grill about 7 minutes on the George Foreman grill or about 6-7 minutes a side depending on thickness.

Here’s the original recipe for your comparisons…

  • 1/2 fresh pineapple, cut into 1/2 inch pieces, i used 4-5 rings from the can
  • 1 Granny Smith apple, peeled, cored, and chopped
  • 1/2 red onion, chopped
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1 orange/red pepper, seeded and chopped
  • 1 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. coarse grain mustard
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 2 tsp. ground ginger

Combine all ingredients in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a boil and then reduce to low. Simmer for 45 minutes. Cool completely before using.

Turkey Burgers

  • 1 lb lean ground turkey
  • 1/2 bunch parsley, chopped
  • 1 Tbl salt
  • 1 Tbl pepper

then add the 1/2 cup chutney (more or less depending on your taste) make sure the chutney is completely cooled off

Combine all ingredients and lightly mix with hands. Form into 4 – 5 patties and grill for about 7 minutes per side depending on thickness. I served them on deli flat, but now Sara Lee has the hamburger rolls that are 80 calories – I love them toasted on the grill with the grilled pineapple.

Nutritional Information is estimated based on my modifications to the recipe. Unfortunately, or fortunately depending on how you look at it, Little Guy and Husband had “regular” burgers. They don’t share my love of fun turkey burgers. So I froze the leftovers and will pull out for myself on burger night!

    Oh my freaking word!! That looks and sounds fantastic. I’m a turkey burger girl myself (can’t stand ground beef) so this is a definite *to be added* to the mix at my house. Awesome.

    Ok – I just bought several pounds of ground turkey and was wanting burgers – but didn’t want to make my standby recipe – SO happy to see this – it looks AMAZING!!!

    I love turkey burgers too! I’ve tried all of your recipes and I love them. If you are looking for some more really good burger ideas, you ought to check out iowagirleats.com. She has several I’ve tried that were good too like goat cheese burger with apricot glaze, jalapeno popper burger, and pizza burger.

    Ooooh, sounds wonderful. I love turkey burgers too and always looking for ways to make moist flavorful ones. Have you tried buffalo burgers (bison?). I think this would work well with that lean meat too. If you like blue cheese, you might try turkey burgers adapting my Buffalo Burgers with Blue Cheese, Avocado and Scallions.

    We made turkey burgers on Friday and I thought about trying your recipe but figured that no one else would like it but me. My husband is adventurous but this may have taken it too far. Still, I liked the idea of the added moisture in the burger because oftentimes lean turkey comes out too dry. So, instead I peeled a yellow squash and grated it (except for the seeds part) and mixed that in. Then I used the old stand-bys of some chopped onion, greek seasoning and worcester sauce. It was AWESOME!! So moist and juicy, we both ate them right up! You couldn’t really taste the squash but it did the trick and I’m even “allowed” to do it again. :)
