Spinach Feta Turkey Burgers

There’s just something about the feta, spinach roasted pepper combination that I’m really enjoying. It’s a trifecta of flavor with the fresh spinach, sweet pepper and salty, creamy cheese. Tonight I put is all on/in a burger. Just perfect on a hot summer day and boy is it HOT! We are breaking records here in Maryland. I’m loving it! :)

Unfortunately I don’t have a grill at the moment so I cooked these on the George Foreman. I don’t think they suffered at all. I still got a nice crisp outer shell and a moist inside. They held together perfectly! The only thing I may do differently next time is add a bit of garlic. Other then that my first stab is a keeper for me! Spinach Feta Turkey Burgers

As for husband and child.. they stuck with regular old boring burgers. Which is totally fine by me. I now have 6 frozen patties to pull out for a quick meal!

  • 1 lb lean ground turkey (at least 90%)
  • 1 cup (80g) Old Fashioned Oats
  • 2 large egg whites
  • 10 oz frozen chopped spinach
  • 1/2 cup (68g) ATHENOS crumbles feta (I used Black Peppercorn)

The first thing you need to do is prep the spinach. If you don’t have a 10oz package defrosted simply put it in a strainer and run it under water. It will defrost in no time.

Once it’s defrosted, squeeze as much liquid as you can out and add it and the rest of the ingredients to a bowl.

Combine using your hands. Don’t overwork, just mix it until all the ingredients merge.

Form into 8 patties each about 100g each.

Grill until cooked through! They took about 9 minutes on my goerge foreman. Be sure to spray with some non-stick cooking spray to avoid sticking.

I served mine on a whole wheat bun with a sweet roasted pepper on top and a side of grilled zucchini and corn on the cob. Here’s the nutritional information for just the pattys. Serve it any way you like!

    Made these last night for the family and it was a HIT!!! The feta cheese gives it so much flavor and keeps it from being too dry as turkey can sometimes be. I love that there was only a few simple ingredients…all of which I had on hand :) The family says this one is a ‘keeper’! Looking forward to seeing what other feta recipes you come up with!

    I made this Wednesday night and it was really good. I added some garlic powder (as you suggested) and onion powder. The only thing mine needed other than that was a little salt. I would recommend you cook a small patty as a test before you cook the rest to taste the seasonings (I usually do this for all hamburgers or meatballs).

    I want to try the honey mustard ones now!

    Loved this recipe except I made meatballs out of it and used ground turkey breast. I made them into meatballs browned them a bit then added some pasta sauce and let them simmer until cooked through. I served them over rice and today I ate the leftovers over quinoa. They are awesome and so flavorful. Thanks for the recipe!

    I tried these last night and they weren’t quite as awesome as I had hoped. They weren’t bad, just kind of bland and, surprisingly, mellow on the feta flavour. I don’t have access to the brand of feta you used, but I don’t think that should be a factor.

    Having just re-read the recipe, I see that I should have probably tried to get more liquid out of the spinach, and added some salt, garlic powder, pepper.

    Next time, it will be better, I guarantee it. :)

    I’m going to beef mine up in the flavor department next time too. But this is a good starter recipe. Honestly, that’s how I approach all my cooking. I need a base… x amount of ground turkey, oats, spinach and then I add different things/flavors. Nothing I ever make is the same way twice. Not sure if that’s a good or a bad thing! lol

    These were very good! I made patties last night and then I cooked up the rest of it like taco meat and ate it with a fork. Definitely a keeper! Thank you! BTW, I served the patties on those very thin Orowheat sandwich thins that I recently discovered.

    One suggestion, if you use skim milk warmed up or a Fat Free Creamer warmed up, soak the oats in this until all product has been soaked up by the oats, then add it to the turkey, you will have the most amazingly moist turkey burgers. I came upon this trick a meatloaf recipe I got from the Food Network and Ellie Krieger’s Mom’s Turkey meatloaf. I have since used it in ALL my ground turkey burgers and meatloaf recipes and it is just an amazing find!It miraculously takes on the texture of ground beef and is really delicious!

    Beth – You can surely use fresh! but It wouldn’t be as dense. I’m not sure how else to describe it but the equivalent amount of fresh it much bulkier because it still has all the moisture. You could freeze your own to just make it easier to work with as fresh spinach in ground meats tends to get messy.

    Not sure if that helped at all! Just brainstorming with you a bit.

    I was cruising your site looking for a turkey burger recipe that I haven’t tried and came upon this one. OH.MY.WORD. This was AWESOME!!!!! I can’t wait until dinner tonight to eat the leftovers…and lunch tomorrow :) I loved this one as much as the bacon cheese inside out burger.     These were the BOMB!! Love, love feta chesse, just never thought about putting in turkey meat.WOW!I used one of the Green Giant Spinach sides and all I had to do was put in the microwave and drain. There was not much water in the bag at all and that way I did not have to cook the frozen boxed spinach. My 14yr old loved these! A must try. Thanks :)

    Does it have to be frozen spinich? I never buy spinich frozen but always have fresh on hand. Just wondering if it affects the cooking? These look delicious!

    You can try fresh but you may have to blanch it first. The frozen is blanched and very concentrated. Let us know how it works out for you!

    This is the way I always make my turkey burgers and I love them. s

    I do add a few things though and just though I would share. I add worcestershire sauce (Maybe a tablespoon or 2?,( sorry I am really bad about measuring things out) and an onion ( again not totally sure about how much, sorry I just usually do it until it looks right, I learned to cook from my grandma. you know a pinch of this a palmful of that)and garlic is also very good in it as well

    I have never tried oats in it before, and i might have to try that except I am not sure what they do.

    My daughter and husband eat these turkey burgers and actually like them, even though they would rather have a “real burger” :)

    Elizabeth – I use the oats for 2 reasons..

    1.) To stretch the meat. I also learned to cook from, well my mom, who learned from her parents and they needed to make food “stretch” as they say. So the oats add bulk.

    2.) Oats hold moisture. Lean turkey meat is dry. The oats help retain some of the moisture from the meat and other ingredients.

    It isn’t necessary, as you know, but I like the texture it adds.

    Made these last night and they turned out dry and lacked flavor. Definitely should have added S&P and maybe only use half the oats. I doubt I will make these again.

    Sorry you didn’t like them. I’m a fan. Keep in mind my “Recipes” are “ideas” I hope to inspire you to try new combinations and make things your own. Definitely add S&P if you think you need it! Cooking should be intuitive! Hope I inspired you in other ways.

    I used fresh spinach instead of frozen and used 1/2 c Panko instead of oats. They’re pretty tasty, however, I should have read the comments first – I agree that garlic, S&P and maybe some onion would have made them even better! :)

    Made these tonight & loved them. I think next time I would double the feta cheese, & add the garlic. (Totally forgot everyone’s advice about garlic till they were done cooking) but very good, & easy!

    I made these for dinner tonight…Excellent! My 7 year old wanted to be sure I was putting one in his lunch for tomorrow! I made a blended recipe..I wet down the oats with milk, reduced by a quarter cup, and added panko I used fresh spinach, but cooked it first, added pepper, garlic and onion powder, then dusted the outside of the patty with panko crumbs…We will be adding these to our weekly meal list for certain, thank you!

    We tried these yesterday for lunch – they were absolutely fantastic. Being a HUGE traditional eater – I was very hesitant to take the chance. We substituted kale for spinach as it looked the freshest up here in Peterborough, ON but the results were fabulous. Thank you so much for posting.     These are awesome!! I’ve made them about a half dozen times now, each a little bit different, and I can seriously not get enough of them. My husband and 3 year old are also big fans of this recipe, and I get asked to make it at least once a week. I use turkey when I can find it (not so easy here) but ground chicken is a good substitute that doesn’t change the flavour much.

    I made these today. I added salt, garlic powder and a touch of old bay seasoning and roasted red peppers. OMG they were awesome. Served on Lettuce wrap with a slice of provolone low fat cheese melted. My daughter put a touch of french dressing on hers and it was really good.

      I don’t see why not. I tend to cook them all and then freeze so I can re-heat in the microwave real quick. Either way should be fine.
