Sorry, I’m a little excited. I whipped up this chocolate dipping sauce as an experiment for my waffles this morning and it came out better then I expected. It will be awesome as a dip for strawberries. Here’s the story. . .

The little guy and I decided on waffles this morning. So I whipped up a batch of quick whole grain banana pancake mix as I had some overripe bananas on hand. We use this recipe in the waffle iron all the time. Dark Chocolate Banana Dipping SauceWhile cooking, I glanced online for other ideas to use up the rest of the brown bananas and I came across Thinking Outside the Loaf: What To Do With Overripe Bananas. They talk about melting them in the microwave. Before I even finished the article, I jumped up and made the chocolate sauce.

It wasn’t as smooth as I thought it would be but I’m thinking my banana wasn’t actually ripe enough. Either way, it was absolute chocolaty yumminess. I sat in the kitchen dipping waffle piece after waffle piece wondering why I haven’t thought of this before.

Peel the banana and place in a microwave safe dish.

Nuke it for a minute. It will look like this.

mix it up. . .

Add the cocoa and vanilla. If it’s too thick add water at an ounce at a time. I used 1oz. Pop back into the microwave for 30 second.

Whisk to help remove any lumps then dip away! :)

The little guy wanted nothing to do with it. He enjoyed his waffled with low sugar jelly. Honestly, I didn’t force the issue as I kind of wanted it all for myself. ;~P

    Wow, that looks amazing. I can’t wait to try it either!

    Andrea: I’ve heard that putting a banana with an apple in a brown paper bag and letting it sit(overnight I’m guessing..?)ripens the banana fast. I’ve never actually tried it though!

    Andrea- Closing them in a brown paper bag will do it with a quickness! It takes a full day or two for a greenish one to get really brown when in the bag. The bag holds in all the ethylene gas, which speeds the ripening. You can through other fruits in the bag with the banana, and the ethylene gas will ripen them as well!

    Fun fact: the brown is a sign that the antioxidant levels have risen

    wow! i have 2 24-oz yogurt tubs full of pieces of frozen ripe bananas in my freezer; i keep them to make smoothies but have not been eating smoothies now that it’s winter. i’m thinking i’ll have to see how this works with my frozen nanners. timely recipe for me; i was just thinking about brownies but this sounds better. thanks!

    This looks fabulous! I’ll definitely keep this in mind.
    Andrea, to turn your bananas brown faster… put them in a brown paper bag and in a window seal that has plenty of sun. It will ripen them faster. Hope that helps.

    This is great, every time I buy bananas it seems they go “fruit fly” bad in this house (we aren’t the biggest banana fans, you see). This gives me a reason to buy bananas because I have a 1 lb chocolate Santa sitting in my kitchen that needs to disappear slowly, as opposed to fast i.e. during a movie.

    Yum, that’s the right way to enjoy a banana! Ha ha… I will definitely try it. I LOVE chocolate dipped strawberries and this would be a healthier alternative.

    Hi Roni! I’ve been a reader for a while but never commented. I just wanted to say I tried the dipping sauce last night and LOVED it!! I’ll definitely be repeating this many times in the future! It was yummy with apple slices. :) I’m purchasing a hand blender today…maybe I’ll try to make the mixture smoother with that?? Thanks for the simple and yummy recipe!

    I did try it in the Magic Bullet and it was awesome on fresh California strawberries from California–served it as birthday dessert for my husband. We all loved it.

    I have eaten this 2 days in a row. Yesterday with oatmeal pancakes from smitten kitchen. Today I added peanut butter to it and ate it with apple slices. It is so good! My girls 3 and 8 also like it!

    Hey! This looks like a super recipe – am interested to know whether this dip would stay in a dip like consistency for a day or two? Or does the chocolate solidify and it needs to be heated? Have you tried storing it in a fridge – I ask as am looking at putting it in some gift baskets for a baby shower and was hoping it would stay in its liquid form for a while longer.

      Honestly Perzen, I’ve always just made and ate it. Not sure how it will store. I’m guessing not a good idea with the banana.
