Homemade Chocolate-Banana “Frosty”

I just finished this and I’m in HEAVEN! It cold, creamy and chocolaty, my favorite combination.

I have to thank my friend Laura who suggest I freeze my brown bananas. Normally I use them for pancakes or muffins but freezing them never occurred to me. So I peeled one, wrapped it in plastic wrap and froze it. (Note to Laura: it didn’t brown!) :~)

Today I pulled it out, put it in the blender with some yogurt and chocolate. Oh My Word! DELISCIOUS!Homemade Chocolate-Banana “Frosty”

  • 1 medium frozen banana
  • ½ cup plain non-fat yogurt (114g)
  • 1 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder (5g)

Place all ingredients in the blender (an upside down one would work great). Blend until well combines and thick. It will come out a frosty-like consistency.

Be warned you will have to work it a bit. There is not that much liquid. If you are using a traditional blender, stop it every few seconds and stir to move the banana around the blades. If you are using one of those upside down blenders (like the magic bullet) give it a few good shakes during the blending. Try not to add any extra liquid it will change the thickness.

It melts fast so eat right away! I sprinkled a little cocoa powder on top for effect. :~)

    My mom made these when we were kids..though she used frozen banana's, milk and vanilla. I would change up regular milk with unsweetened almond breeze. Reply

    That looks super yummy! I love chocolate and bananas together. I always throw a banana and peanut butter in with my chocolate protein shakes. I will definitely have to try this! Reply

    I make these with frozen bananas, unsweetened almond breeze, cocoa powder and ice cubes, and vanilla. I usually only use 1/2 of a small banana, just to keep the points lower. I do them in my VitaMix machine, so the ice completely chops up smoothly. I stick my peeled bananas that are starting to go bad, in a ziploc sandwich baggie and throw in the freezer. Reply

    Hi Roni, I like this idea. Thanks. I quite often freeze bananas for baking etc and just leave the skin on and just toss them in the freezer loose. Saves using a bag because the peel IS the bag. Wonder if you could easily peel them from frozen for this recipe? On another note has anyone ever had frozen bananas on sticks dipped in chocolate? Like a popsicle. I only dip half in choclate but might still be too much for some. Reply

    Lisa - They are hard to peel frozen which is why I peeled and wrapped in saran. and yes I have had a frozen banana dipped in chocolate... Oh my WORD SO good!! Reply

    I too make something like this but use unsweetened chocolate almond breeze as it only has 40 calories per cup. I mix it with frozen banana and it is just like a chocolate milkshake. I will have to try it with the yogurt the "tang" would be a nice change. Reply

    I froze 2 bananas last night. I wanted to have this for breakfast tomorrow but I am not sure if I will be able to eat it quick enough. If I make it in the morning I would have at least 15 minutes before I would be drinking it. I try to do breakfast at work. The later I can eat each day the better chance I will have to make it to lunch without getting super hungry. Reply

    I just wanted to add that if you take the frozen bananas and put them in the food processor they easily turn into banana softserve. I've done this several times and it is really good. You can add anything to it once its blended. I never thought to put in fat free yogurt or unsweetened cocoa powder. I'll try that next time. Reply

    I did this as a fast quick snack and didnt have the banana frozen and put in a full cup of yogurt. I don't know if the tartness came from my banana because it wasn't browning yet but I tried to counteract it with putting some splenda in it but it didn't do much. But it was still pretty good for 4 points! :) A full serving of calcium! :) Reply

    I'm a little late to this party, but on the topic of freezing bananas: if you slice them and lay them flat-ish in the freezer (say, between two pieces of saran wrap) they'll freeze faster and blend more easily, and once they're frozen you can toss 'em in a ziploc bag and they'll keep for quite a while. I generally keep frozen bananas and strawberries in my freezer for emergency smoothie supplies. Reply
