Produce Pick: Canary Melon – Video Post

Posted in: Produce Picks, Video Posts | 12 Comments

I’m brining back the produce picks! It’s been forever and to be honest nothings has caught my eye recently until this bright yellow melon called my name last week.

I couldn’t find much online about the canary melon, this write up from wisegeek was the most informative. Please let me know if you’ve tried it or see them in your grocery store!

About the “trees in my belly!”:

    1) I can’t quite hear it — is he saying trees or treats? Because treats would definitely make sense.
    2) There was a tree on your shirt in the video on which he first (I think) said “trees in my belly!” so I was wondering if he was saying *you* had a tree on *your* belly and was just trying to say he wanted to have one, too. Not sure. :-P

    Great video, as always.

I looked for a canary melon, but only found crenshaw – didn’t buy. Maybe tomorrow. A little trivia for you: the grainy things you feel in pears are the cell walls they have an actual name called “sclerids”. I learned this in biology in college and it’s one of those fast facts that cannot find it’s way out of my brain. Every time we have pears, I take a bite and say “mmmm, sclerids.” My husband thinks I’m a little off. Takes one to know one!!!

Love to watch you and the toddler – your patience inspires me.

Hi Roni! A Canary melon! :D As you might imagine, they are quite common here in the Canaries. They are deliciously sweet and wonderful! One of the ways they’re typically served here (apart from plain! lol) is with a piece of Serrano ham wrapped around it…or tossed into a mixed salad (lettuce, tomato, cucumber, onion, corn, tuna and melon). I’m so glad you liked your first taste of it.

    hi Ronnie
loved this video as i love them all…

however, off topic – love your wall (green) color…. omg, i feel a little strange asking you this question… but wondered what the color name of the wall right behind you as your slicing/dicing the canary melon…
I’m going to try to find one this evening onmy way home.

thanks Roni as always – you are beautiful as ever.

Hmmm time to go on a supermarket search for this melon. I love the way Ryan just dug in there at the end – what a star!

I just bought a canary melon last night and i thought it was really good but it tastes alot like a cantaloupe and is a little expensive for a melon.. I also think it smells kind of like a pineapple which is pretty wierd lol

Inspired by your Produce Pick, we tried Lemon Basil from our local Farmer’s Market. LOVED IT! I highly recommend it over wheat pasta or with some fish.

I found your site a month ago or so and have been trying some of your recipes. We have been loving the ones we’ve tried. We’re trying the spaghetti sauce and meatballs tonight!

My husband and I had our first taste of a Canary melon from our garden!! We had no clue what type of melon we had planted the tag only said melon. So we had to do some research on when to know when it was ready to harvest and what it was. We were pleasantly surprised. Its going into a fruit salad tonight and I can’t wait for the few more canary melons that we still have on the vine.
