How do you do your pasta measurements - such as in your latest video, how much is 2 ounces? Is that ¼ cup?
-Erin
Hi Erin!
That’s a good question. Sometimes I forget I’m a bit of a scale freak!
I always weight my pasta dry on my digital scale. You can weigh it in ounces or grams. Two ounces of dry pasta is about 57g. To be honest, I have no idea what it weighs cooked, I normally make my own 2 ounces in a small pot. Does anyone measure it post cooking?
I hope that helps!

Melissa - I'm not sure! Give me an example of a recipe you are trying to add and I'll see if I can trouble shoot.

Hi Heather! This isn't stupid at all! To be honest... I decide once the meal is done and what I feel is a good size portion for the cals. So I guess my short answer is I don't know.. I just decide! 🙂

This may be a dumb questions, but how do you know how many servings are in a finished meal so you know how to divide properly?

Unfortunately it depends on the type of pasta. Does this help? http://www.barillaus.com/Home/Pages/Measuring_Pasta.aspx

Hello! I'm coming out of lurkdom to say that I love your site and I too am a scale freak. It actually has a permanent spot on my counter. I'm so bad that I'll make a recipe and actually weigh the entire completed recipe and divide the grams by the number of servings and then weigh my serving. Not sure that makes sense. Like if I make spaghetti, I'll weigh the whole recipe so if it comes out to 1000 grams then I divide that by 4 servings and know that 1 serving is 250 grams. So then I put my plate on the scale and measure out 250 grams of spaghetti. I think I need to go to food scales anonymous! 🙂

I have a handy dandy pasta measurer thingie that I got at Linens N Things for the stringy pastas and for other kinds (spiral, elbow, etc.) I measure according to the serving size. If it says 3/4C then I measure 3/4 dry and then measure 3/4 cooked to serve.

Barillaus - What a FABULOUS idea! I love the rubber bands!

Barillaus has a table for all pasta's.
I saved the plastic top off a condiment bottle that matched a serving size. I fist the pasta, place the end in the cap to confirm the measure. Sometimes, I'll do the entire box and put small rubberbands around a serving size, so in the future I just have to grab. It helps when you are really tired and hungry. 🙂

I'm a scale freak too. I can't answer cup wise but I've noticed that when pasta is cooked it is almost exactly twice the weight.

I'm like Shelley I eyeball it and then take what I want and the hubby eats what he wants and packs the rest for lunch!

I'm delurking now - been keeping up w/your blogs for a couple months now. I am a scale freak too, but usually with stuff that has already been cooked or doesn't need to be cooked (e.g., cooked meat in ounces, cheese in ounces, etc.)
For pasta, I just eyeball it before cooking, & then measure out my portion. 1/2 cup = 2 points, 1 cup = 4 pounts, etc. My hubby eats the rest!
